Thought if I posted this again under the London Design Festival subject, it might get swamped by the Fide delegate discussions. Tuesday 6th October, at 5pm is when Blue Peter will be showing the feature from the Design Festival. It definitely features Joel the Blue Peter presenter playing against Emma Bentley, and may also feature a certain publicity officer, bringing the piece down a little

Will it end with a "If you'd like to get involved in chess, or learn how to play, visit/contact ________?" If yes, what fills the blank, and if not, there should be!

It'll be on BBC One. According to the Radio Times website, the program runs from 4.35 until 4.55. Being a student, it isn't all that many years since I watched Blue Peter, although the Presenters have all changed (possibly multiple times) since then!

I imagine that it will be available to watch on BBC iPlayer for 7 days after the broadcast.

It's available here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0 ... 6_10_2009/

Quite a good feature, I thought. Seemed to have a really bright, positive tone, which is not something you always get with media features about chess.

Interesting clip. I see Emma had total respect for her opponent by playing 1. e4 e5 2. Bc4 Bc5 3. QF3! it looks like he spotted that one and played Nh6, though difficult to tell.

"Game, set, match"

Someone should tell her that's the wrong game...

He played 3...Qe7. You can see this if you pause the iPlayer video at 22.18. By the looks of it the game continued 4. d3 a5 5. Nc3 Nh6 6. Bxh6 gxh6 ... .
Good to see a certain Publicity Officer appearing as well!

This doesn't precisely belong here.

CHESS ON BBC4. A film called 'How to Win at Chess' will be broadcast around Christmas time. It is part of the BBC strand called Timeshift. The programme is aimed at players who know the rules but haven't played much and who would benefit from simple advice and tips.
It is something of a triumph to get chess back on television. You may remember that I asked Forum people to help encourage this development some months ago.

The game, as I recall started 1.e4 e5 2. Bc4 Bc5 3. Qf3, at which point I had to explain that 3...b5 may end the game slightly too quickly. It actually ran for just about an hour in the end, and they probably got a good hour of footage, maybe even more, for the 3 minute feature.

That's interesting. I had got slightly irritated with TV taking over the whole show for hours and told Emma she could try for Scholar's mate if she wanted! Her private board was set up with the black square on the right and she hadn't noticed. I had to go up and sort that one out!

Gary Kasparov against Jeremy (later Sir) Hanley M.P in the Parliament. Gary was giving a simul. Jeremy made a horrible losing move in the opening. I looked at Gary and he allowed Jeremy to take his move back. That game was later published.

So Ben, you are in good company.
