Re: David Glueck (Oxfordshire team 1991-2)

.... I wonder if a similar look at other country finals from this era will revive other memories. Can anyone think of any particular county final that was particularly memorable? Some of them will have already been heavily reported on at the time (or since), but maybe some have not. Not other final...

Re: David Glueck (Oxfordshire team 1991-2)

Half the team played for Milton Keynes too. At the time 6 were MK, 5 each from Bedford and Leighton Buzzard. Should the "PP Hare" be "PD Hare"? I played the latter in the Civil Service League twice in 1995. They could obviously be different people. I think Paul Hare worked for HMRC (but Paul Habers...

Re: David Glueck (Oxfordshire team 1991-2)

Just out of interest, is there some sort of story of significance behind this particular match- a random draw in a county game from 30 years ago doesn't seem like one that most people would likely have kept in mind without a good reason? I quite enjoy having Britbase updates on this forum. Why do y...

Re: Intersection between academia and international chess titles

Surrey were in the Minor Counties Championship then? There was a rule that if you didn't qualify for the big boys event several years running, you could play in the Minor Counties. Bedfordshire were frequent qualifiers by virtue of playing and winning in the EACU whose champion was only allowed in ...

Re: David Glueck (Oxfordshire team 1991-2)

My recollections are dodgy after all this time, complicated by the reun the following year when Oxon got revenge (although I won). All the Beds forenames are in this version http://adrianelwin.co.uk/Bedfordshire/oxfordwin.html .

Mark,

I think you will find that famous day (well to locals anyway) was in 1992.

Re: ECF Membership Reform

... For grading, Paul Cooksey mentioned a cost to the ECF of "around a pound a member". A thread on membership reform should not be diverted by the cost of "grading" (rating since 2020), but any diversion into that area should not be anchored in Paul's estimate. The quotes we got for building LMS a...

Re: P Grades question

Having played no classical chess since 2020 I was surprised to see that my game from the 4NCL in February 2024 gave me an ECF provisional rating of 2453. My previous rating was 2290 so is this P rating just based on the 2024 game or is there more to the calculation than that? Click on the red ratin...

Re: Rapid events with over rated players.

In the British Rapidplay this weekend the highest of ECF rapidplay or FIDE rapidplay has been used as rating for the event. Without counting I estimate that the ECF rapidplay is higher in 90% of cases sometimes by a huge margin. From the work based on the year end lists ECF was higher than FIDE 2/3...

Re: Active/Inactive/Deceased/Merged ?

I wrote something about this on another thread - but rather than trawl through myriad posts I'll try and go through the arguments again. If you are currently playing chess you are "active" - if you aren't clearly you are "inactive". Now we are all well aware of players who after a period of inactiv...

Re: Active/Inactive/Deceased/Merged ?

Deceased is for cases where a results officer has informed us of the player's death May I take this opportunity to inform you of the passing of Ron Crow and Gordon Ironside, Peter Davey, Cyril Winter, John Purkiss and Martin Harvey all of whom are shown as "Active". The most recent of these was Cyr...

Re: Active/Inactive/Deceased/Merged ?

Rating codes remain Active until the rating status is changed. Merged is for cases where data has been added to a duplicate record for that player Deceased is for cases where a results officer has informed us of the player's death Inactive is for players who with no active rating ask for their profi...
