It costs £25 to take part in my local 10k run.
Why?
I've no idea. Costs of stewarding?

Re: ECF Membership Reform

A lot of people seem to be complaining about the cost of playing a sport that is incredibly cheap to participate in, compared to most other sports. It costs £25 to take part in my local 10k run. It's £17 just to watch my local non-league football team. It's £11 to go swimming for 90 minutes at the l...

Re: Simul vs GM Sergey Tiviakov - 27th February

There are 10 spaces left at this event, so booking in the next couple of weeks is advised, if you would like to challenge Sergey.

Re: 34 x DGT 2010 chess clocks for sale

A few people have expressed an interest and asked for a picture, so I've attached a photo. The clocks would retail new at around £1650, so I thought that £850 would be a fair price. There are 38 sets of double-weighted pieces, with four Queens per set, all in drawstring bags. There are 44 green and ...

Re: 1st Medway Chess Congress - 23rd/24th September 2017

Unfortunately, I have had to cancel the Medway Congress due to lack of entries. I will be returning payment to those who have entered so far. I may look for a date later in the year to re-launch the idea if I can find a sponsor. I'd only had 12 paying entrants and really need about 40 to 45 to just ...

Re: 1st Medway Chess Congress - 23rd/24th September 2017

Thanks, I wasn't aware of the fees increase, but as it has been advertised at £7 / £5, we'll stick to that and make it a flat £7.50 for further events. I had considered a 10am start, but we're obviously reliant on the locking up time that was preferred by the venue. Similarly, I had considered using...

Re: Media comments on chess

I think there was a discussion on here a few years ago about FF's actual chess ability or otherwise. Conclusive concrete evidence was frustratingly hard to pin down IIRC. According to his interview on Desert Island Discs, he played for Lancashire as a junior and his brother played for England. The ...

It was Akopian (along with Movsesian and Nisipeanu) that Kasparov referred to as a "chess tourist".
