Re: British Chess Championships 2011

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know if the current financial situation has drastically affected attendance for this tournament? I only ask because I was an Arbiter at the recent Northern Gigafinal of the UK Chess Challenge, and when I used to play in it (2007 was the last time) there were nearly...

Re: Rules about drinking alcohol before or during matches

As my first post in almost 2 years, I must express my shock at such a topic ever being thought up in the first place! Surely beer and chess go hand in hand like the cinema and popcorn, or restaurants and food?! On a more serious note however, I simply do not have the time to read all of this thread ...

Re: matt turner plays peter pooblsingham in round 2 what a joke!

But never, ever pair Arabs or Iranians with Israelis unless you determine it is OK (Qatari are fine. UAE not at all). They just can't play. This is an unwritten rule for the Olympiads. That's sad. I can see why it happens, but it's sad. is that really how it is? that's bad... i understand why, but ...

I used to run chess events with Sally McIntosh in Derbyshire when we were colleagues, but now I am at Uni, so cannot find the time to organise them anymore, but if anyone has any questions, please feel free to ask me, I still keep contact with Sally, and I believe I shall be Arbitrating on the day a...

Re: Academic Assistance

I can't say I've ever come across equal numbers at Primary School. For example, when I was at Cantrell Primary School, we had 2 girls out of 30 - both the daughters of the chess coach. I also recently coached students at William Howitt, and there were no girls in the group of 15 students I was coach...

Never Mind The Buzzcocks had a giant knight on it once, (the idea was to pair the item with the celebrity, and Dane Bowers, whoever he is :P , was the correct answer) and Alesha Dixon knew what it was!

So pester the BBC for a bit...?

Re: Fifty-move clarification

how often do these issues ever arise though? i've only ever once been anywhere near close to a 50 move finish, and that was cos my opponent was about 90 yo and hadn't play a K + R v. K ending in over a decade and couldn't remember how to do it! :p

Michelle, try Chessmaster for the Playstation, it really interested me for a few months, especially playing the 4-year old version of a GM, and also playing in a tournament which included a monkey!!! :D And for the PC, I suggest www.playchess.com, and speaking of which, I paid for a year's subscript...

Re: Drinking at the board.

I've been very close to getting drunk once, I foolishly decided that Whiskey would be a good breakfast before the 2007 Terafinals! :P I remember talking to my first opponents' Dad that morning before the game, and I tried to remain still, but he got suspicious! Didn't stop his 10 year old son from l...
