There's also the "other" Simon Williams

It's claimed that the existence of a duplicate confused the ECF Office into paying the other one for some coaching work.

He uses the English grading scale where 150 is roughly 1800 and 200 roughly 2200.

He got there, on English domestic ratings anyway.

Re: Does anyone play the Spanish opening exchange various 4. Bxc6?

Bologan's Ruy Lopez For Black invites us to choose between 5...Be7 and 5...Ne7. Indeed it does. He would like to avoid playing the otherwise automatic .. f6 . The problem with all the lines that involve potentially sacrificing the e pawn is that you have to find or remember some complex or obscure ...

Re: Alekhine with f3

At normal club level, it sets great problems. For the player who moves the f pawn that is. Here's one I played earlier (county match in 1999) 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 f5 3.Nxe5 Qe7 4.d4 d6 5.Qh5+ g6 6.Nxg6 Qxe4+ 7.Be3 Nf6 8.Qh4 hxg6 9.Qxf6 Qxc2 10.Qxg6+ Ke7 11.Bg5+ Kd7 12.Bb5+ You're supposed to play 3. .. Re: Motions

Back in 1974, it was only in the NCCU area that ambitious leagues sought County status. So you had the Liverpool league and the Teesside league, both of which were accepted by the NCCU as counties and the Manchester league which wasn't. Plausibly similar leagues in Bristol, Birmingham and London wer...

In order of relative popularity

Qd6

Ne7
Qf6
Be7
Nf6 (dubious maybe)

Re: Motions

I'm probably going to regret asking this, but why aren't there Merseyside teams in the County Championships? There have been and there could be. Presumably the usual story of a shortage of willing players and organisers. 4NCL North is competing for the attention of players although the absence of M...

The simplest rule is that which most other "sports" have evolved to, namely that you declare your squad at the start of the season or at an interim transfer deadline.

Re: London Chess Classic 2017

Has it been announced that there is going to be a 9 round Open? There's been one in every previous year as far as I recall. But if it shouldn't be assumed to take place until announced, is there going to be a British Championship next year? For that matter is there going to be an English Seniors in...

Re: London Chess Classic 2017

The Festival will now take place from Saturday December 2 until Sunday December 10 at the second venue. When the schedule is published, we will find out whether the intention is to have 9 rounds in 9 days, 9 rounds in 8 with a one day rapid or 9 rounds in 7 with a two day rapid and whether the rapi...

Re: London Chess Classic 2017

Do you ever wait until you have the facts about anything before jumping to negative conclusions about it? I see your point that school activities dictate the timetable, but that puts the double round day as rounds 1 and 2, being the first Sunday, or rounds 6/7 on the final Saturday or rounds 7/8 on...

Re: London Chess Classic 2017

The London Chess Classic Festival will take place from Sunday December 3 until Monday December 11 at the second venue. So the format for the supporting tournaments isn't going to be as for previous years. The convenience or otherwise of travel to the "second venue" is a likely considerati...
