Re: New service for ECF members?

I am puzzled ... Short term memory loss can cause that. ... you seem to feel my comment 'almost certainly edited his own post' is a criticisim. Michael's actual sentence ran: "Yes, but Bill Phillips is a moderator: he has almost certainly edited his own post, though not subsequent repetition of his...

Re: New service for ECF members?

Yes, but Bill Phillips is a moderator: he has almost certainly edited his own post, though not subsequent repetition of his misinformation and still no retraction. But then, he doesn't log on very often! Wonder what the honorarium is? This smearing is a good example of what is wrong with the Englis...

There does not appear to be any and I gave up on my requests for moderation.
Carl complained about this post.
Note the words at the bottom of that post: "*This post has been edited by a moderator."

Re: IOVPS Service is Crap!

Something like CONVERT(CAST(CONVERT(fieldname USING latin1) AS binary) USING utf8) will probably do the trick but not after beer. Alignment could be a pain. I can't see consecutive letters at all well, probably not for at least another month; nonetheless, I am prepared to go through the Cyrillic te...

Re: Media comments on chess

DAILY TELEGRAPH a supplement on 'Parents' Guide to University'. What's your game plan? 2 large diagrams. The diagrams were on a large chess-type board. There were more than 6 different pieces, labelled variously: Teacher Training, Medicine, Astronomy, Law, Economics, Veterinary, Archictecture, Dram...

Re: IOVPS Service is Crap!

Carl, Is a suboptimal approach worth considering? For instance doing a find and replace on, say, "émigré" and similar. Was that how you solved the "apostrophe" problem? It should be possible for forumites to come up with a list to be converted. I can only recall two non-Latin scripts being used: R...

Re: Happy Birthday, Bernard Cafferty

Leornard's first game against Bernard can be downloaded from Britbase. It was played on 28 August 1957 during that year's British.

I couldn't find David Robertson's game against Bernard in Britbase. Is it worth forwarding to John Saunders for inclusion? Was it played in a tournament?

Re: IOVPS Service is Crap!

Mrs Palivec burst into tears and concentrating all her misery on to a special stress on every word groaned out: 'A week ago he-got-ten-years.' 'There you are then,' said Sveik, 'so he's already served seven days of it.' Words such as "émigré" show up as "émigré" in the affected posts. The utf val...

Good morning. Mr. Urcan, I do appreciate your reminder that Mr. Winter does not wish images posted on his website to be copied and posted in other places on the internet without his permission. I apologize for this happening with the youtube Slide Show I made about Vera Menchik. As Mr. Gavriel note...

Re: IOVPS Service is Crap!

It seems that the msbs of quite a few bytes have disappeared. Perhaps a consequence of an undesirable utf -> ascii conversion. For instance, at http://www.ecforum.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=3211 the Russian text has been replaced by gibberish. There is a snapshot at http://web.archive.org/web/20140...

Re: Emergency Board Meeting - Draft Minutes

... this was a compromise by the Board (at my expense) to get rid of Andrew Paulson as President immediately. He has now gone - and good riddance too. On the downside, he now has 7 votes in his favour, out of c.300 at the Council meeting The ECF notice states : "The English Chess Federation Board r...

Re: Emergency Board Meeting - Draft Minutes

You have been doing your homework on the AGON Agreement; let me help you out. Nigel Short has alleged that Kirsan Ilyumzhinov or some other FIDE official(s) representing a conflict of interest are behind AGON. If, as he claims, they stand to reap huge profits or that they seek to control the World ...

Re: Emergency Board Meeting - Draft Minutes

You're right about 'deposit'. Both that it is often refundable, and that in the Agreement it is not stated how or why it would be refunded. This is because the 'deposit' was added after the Presidential Board approved the Agreement as a sop to Ilya Levitov, Executive Director of the Russian Chess F...
