Re: British Rapidplay 2024
I noticed that young players, quite often, still play on until they are mated. This really is rather tedious when they are playing in a serious event or indeed against me when it's hardly a serious event. Perhaps their coaches might explain this point to them.

Re: Best Game by an English Player (the vote)
No 6, the Boden - Macdonnell game is the 1869 game and the date is given correctly for the game itself in the book. It is the index of games that is in error.

Re: Best Game by an English Player (the vote)
I wanted to vote for the fifth game in the 1843 Paris match, St. Amant v. Staunton. Is that what No. 4 in the list is? (There were 21 games in the match, so I can't tell which is included in the index). John - I am afraid that your game is not in the book, The game given is the 21st game which is S...

Re: Best Game by an English Player (the vote)
Gordon v Jones is indeed the Q loss game which the author justifies by saying his book is "Memorable Games" and not Best Games. Kazimzhdanov v Adams is the draw from the 6th standard play game (the one move win game), again qualified by the author as Memorable.

Re: The Best Game of Chess played by an English Player
Surely, the strength of the opponent is a highly relevant factor in deciding on the best game of chess by an English player. Amongst the older games, that might suggest the following (some of which have already been mentioned) - Yates v Alekhine (Karlsbad 1923), Sir George Thomas v Capablanca (and v...

Nick - it was from Hastings 1975/76. Perhaps someone could post it. If nothing else, it would show that Ray really could play.Nick Ivell wrote: ↑Sun Feb 25, 2024 6:19 pmOne of my favourites is Keene v Miles. I forget where it was played; it's the one where Keene found Qb1! in an IQP position.

Re: The Best Game of Chess played by an English Player
Perhaps it would be something useful and interesting that the Forum could do. After all we all play the game and presumably spend some time looking at games, historical and modern. If we could Identify 50 games as a starting point, we could have a vote. So far, we have four games.

Re: The Best Game of Chess played by an English Player
Geoff - Maczynski v Pratten is in the book and Neil Hickman points out that either 17 Bd6 or 18 Bd6 would have won for White! A beautiful finish but there are some fairly big holes.

Agreed - but the obsession was less the Forum's and more one particular forumite who no longer posts.Nick Ivell wrote: ↑Fri Feb 02, 2024 5:56 pmThe forum has been a better place since it rid itself of its RDK obsession.
