Re: ECF Newsletter No 11

I reproduce the following paragraph from the June e-newsletter just received. Anyone in a position to give more details? "It's coming up to membership renewal time – Please watch this space in the upcoming July e-Newsletter for a special offer from our sponsors Tradewise, who are finalising th...

Re: PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2017

Like Matthew, I was unclear on the assessment criteria: is the award solely for results/performances or are there other aspects to consider? The email which invited members to vote didn't say but did, for example, describe one nominee as a "role model" - what does that encompass? Also, the...

Christopher Kreuzer wrote:Is it unprecedented to delay the Queen's Speech?

Don't know but the delay is apparently (according to the World at One) due to the fact the speech has to be written on goatskin parchment paper and would take time to dry. Really?

Re: General Election 2017

FWIW, spread betting sites are currently suggesting an overall Tory majority of 70+ seats. The betting picture is very complicated, but in some way it mimics the brexit market, so 80% of the bets are for Jeremy Corbyn to be the next PM, but 80% of the money is on Theresa may to be the next PM. Poss...

Re: ECF Finance Council Meeting April 2017

My understand is that you can play up to 3 games or 6 RP league Games, and that after the 4th game, you need to be an member of the ECF, or the league/club will be charge an one off fee of the Bronze membership fee, that was my understand of it, can you please confirmed I was right? Re: Recommended chess club website software?

It's possible to set up a website without, I think, much technical expertise using Google Sites. A clubmate used this to set up a site for the chess group he runs at the local library: https://sites.google.com/site/chessatstreathamlibrary/.

Re: Poll: Is the ECF doing a good job?

[How does the] ECF itself measure its success, if it does? Now that’s a good question. The Board's report to last October's AGM had this: ... in line with accepted best practice the Board wishes to develop a set of key performance indicators in order to be able to monitor its performance against it...

Re: ECF Finance Council Meeting April 2017

So to take an unlikely but not entirely impossible scenario: If a player for (say) Bath plays 4 games in his club tournament, 4 games in the Somerset League and 4 games in the Bristol League, all without taking out membership, his club will be billed 3 x £15 = £45 (one bill of £15 direct from the E...

Both the Croydon league and the Surrey league have one. For matches in both, two games are played on each board with alternating colours.

Can we agree that some of the Board were duped, and others were involved in the duping?

That's possibly true but I don't know. Certainly I felt the Board acted without circumspection.

Re: Corruption scandal rocks the Bulgarian Chess Federation

No surprise. Unfortunately, this is par for the course. The CAS allows anyone to pursue the most frivolous lawsuits against FIDE, giving them latitude which no normal court would allow. The ECF Board of course blazed this trail, and perhaps were able to give Danailov some hints on how to cause maxi...
