Re: Media comments on chess

Hi Lawrence, It seems scarcely a week passes these days without some football commentator somewhere comparing the game they are watching to a game Chess. I first heard it used way back in 1965 during the cup final between Liverpool and Leeds. Tennis, Cricket and Snooker are frequently compared to ch...

Re: An early Tony Miles game

Hi Andy, Another book excellent by Mr Barden is 'Play Better Chess' The one with the scary picture of John Nunn. There you are skipping through mating attacks, you turn the page and........ BOO! https://image.ibb.co/minDrG/john_nunn.jpg It's tagged to one of my favourite John Nunn quotes regarding t...

Re: An early Tony Miles game

Hi Roger, Ha. OOPS. I went through the game on the PGN. did not see the notes in the game. Hi Andy, "I made heavy use of Mr Barden's Guardian Book of Chess," Not the only one. I won a few good Gorings after being tipped towards it from that book and Paul Motwani in an lecture spoke very hi...

Re: An early Tony Miles game

That's a good find. He is R.F.T Wood but they call him Frank (wonder if it is the same Frank Wood whose daughter, Margaret, married Jonathan Penrose. Just curious.) Hi Roger, "Among other players of that era," (Dragon Players) Count 'man of the moment' James Tarjan and Gennady Sosonko amon...

Re: FIDE Laws of Chess

I've read so far and am still not sure. Is it one illegal move (no matter what it is) losses in all formats of chess. Classical, Rapid, Blitz.......friendlies? Or is it two or three. If it one illegal move and you lose then I think lower leagues will and should ignore this and for an actual illegal ...

Re: Sultan Khan - A newly discovered game and a challenge

Hi John (Saunders) I saw about 15-20 scorebooks. I'll have a word with Dave Archibald (God alone knows why he cannot log back on here.) Dave is the curator of all things Aitken, I'm sure we can arrange to have the books sent down. Be good to get Aitken's full C.V. available. I too am wary of the PM ...

Re: Sultan Khan - A newly discovered game and a challenge

Hi John, I did tweak it a bit with Paint Shop, brightened it up to make it look clearer. But it's genuine. Sent John a personal PM to say it's on the level. I would not tamper with a piece of history from the Edinburgh Chess Club it's my spiritual home (and was infact my home for 5 years.) Also this...

Re: European Club Cup 8-14 October, Antalya

Edinburgh were there last year. 62 teams took part.

They had to pay their own way, the boys said they had a great time.

Re: Sultan Khan - A newly discovered game and a challenge

Hi Guys, Not one of my scams, Dave cannot log on so sent me an email. I have not tampered with the moves, they are exactly what Dave sent. But I do understand the concern, I was thinking when I posted it this lot won't believe me. I am going to the club tomorrow night. I'll take my camera and supply...

Re: Sultan Khan - A newly discovered game and a challenge

Hi the game in question. It is game no.83a in Aitken's Chess Scorebook which is at the Edinburgh Chess Club. I'm passing this on from Dave Archibald who cannot seem to log on. [Event "Oxford"] [Site "Oxford"] [Date "1933.11.23"] [Round "?"] [White "Sultan...

Re: Chess.com Isle Of Man Tournament 23 Sep to 1 Oct 2017

Hi Ian,

I'm thinking yes it must be played but the only legal move option had me pondering.

Twice Nakamura has been involved, maybe it's him stopping the clocks and
calling across the arbiter over because he (and me!) do not know the exact rules. :)

Re: Chess.com Isle Of Man Tournament 23 Sep to 1 Oct 2017

Re The missing move to make the position a genuine 3 fold rep. In the Carlsen - Nakamura game (see above) and a wee minor point I'd cleared up in plain English. Sergey Karjakin - Hikaru Nakamura, Bilbao 2016 A very similar situation from a very similar position. (The identical position was reached a...
