Re: 4NCL Season 2023-24

I suspect the hotels are going to be in for a rude awakening when who they thought were going to use their venues are off overseas instead

Re: Cambridge International Open

I for one thought the tournament was excellent, and the schedule very agreeable. It meant that I minimised the number of days of annual leave I needed to take, that I could get away Sunday afternoon and get ready for the week ahead, and I really appreciated the big gap between rounds. For me, I woul...

Re: Enquiries about chess clubs

Dare I say it, think of it as a typical marketing funnel. You get some enquiries (leads), of which a percentage will turn up to view the club (market qualified leads) of which a percentage of that will become members (conversions). There are some things you can do to try and up the percentages at ea...

Re: Cambridge International Open

As one of those "long tail players", it's not my fault that I spotted a tournament that was in a great location, in a nice venue, with a fair entry fee, and entered promptly. I wasn't surprised at all that it filled so quickly, and that can only be a good thing for future events. I do feel like some...

Re: Most Annoying Behaviour?

The most annoying thing recently I had to put up with was at Southend last year where my opponent spent much of the game belching at regular 15-20 second intervals...

Re: ECF Blitz rating possibility ?!

I would be happy to try and put together a database-based/web front end blitz grading system. If people are happy with this, I can set one up that uses the same grading system as ECF grades. I would need some volunteer result inputters though... Let me know what you think.

Re: Women's In-Tournament Training II

Why should people not wishing to have in-tournament training subsidise those who do? There is already a donation mechanism for those who want to give to the cause...

Re: Why do so few women play chess compared to bridge.

It's a tricky one. I do feel that society is largely to blame whether a girl has all the 'typical' female characteristics. One only has to look at the animal kingdom to realise that it's a misnomer to believe that the female of the species is some sort of a docile, gentle and non-aggressive creature...

Re: New Directors of Women's Chess

Yes, the membership may be perceived to be cheap, but when you include game fees and club memberships (who I think perhaps need the money more on balance), it's maybe not so cheap for what is essentially a board game. Just a thought...

Re: New Directors of Women's Chess

I would like to know what evidence Matthew uses where he seems to think that for the 6 months that I was in the post, I achieved nothing.

Re: New Directors of Women's Chess

It appears Matthew's logic is that an empty post will achieve more than a filled post. Good job Matthew isn't in a position of decision-making. It's very easy to criticise when you're perched on your high-horse. Perhaps you should engage that organ between your ears before you leap into your vicious...
