Re: Where did I went wrong?

Soheil, I'm a patzer but even I can see that move 7 is a waste of tempo. You are either thinking too much with the information you have from reading and translating and getting confused or not thinking at all about how to apply what you read. In your previous game when you played Qd3 you reacted to ...

Re: Kasparov blitz challenge

These are some of the best chess players ever but its kind of disappointing how many of them have stepped outside the rules...

Re: ECF enewsletter

One organisation of which I am a member allows people to opt out of paper copies of newsletters. Instead we are notified when the pdf is available for download. Not quite the same as direct to your own mail account, but probably worth considering.

Re: April 2016 Council meeting

Today I received what must be the first unprompted correspondence from a member club in my time as county secretary. I’m not the ECF delegate/representative and the comments were prompted by the consultation initiated by Michael Farthing so he deserves credit for stimulating debate where silence usu...

Re: Tactics evenings/exploring opening evenings etc

David, interesting idea. My first thought would be to consider what openings members currently play, or have struggled with in the past season. Then look to build a session by running through illustrative games perhaps played by some of the stronger members, so there is a shared sense of ownership i...

Re: Quality of club venues

Niall, I suspect it would amount to a sense of a reasonable environment for chess. I was struck by the fact that if a new club sought to join a league, one would consider such factors formally or otherwise, but an existing club moving venue effectively has the freedom to downgrade its facilities wit...

Quality of club venues

I am sure we have all experienced good and bad venues, the majority in my experience being tolerable. However, just as we have seen congresses in more comfortable venues do well in recent years, I've become of an increasing number of players who won't play evening chess because after a hard days wor...

Re: Adjournments, Quickplay Finishes RIP (2017)?

The first season of digital clocks being used in the Bucks league is drawing to a close. Apart from confusion caused by unfamiliarity, the only objection raised has been the issue of delay in adding the time after the first time control, so that you don't automatically have your exact remaining time...

Re: 2016 Candidates Moscow 10-29 March

Returning to Topalov for a moment. The h4 idea has also been used by Rapport. I thought I'd seen one of his games in this line recently, but it was actually Korobov - Jumbayev. A similar Benko type position arose but Black preferred e6 to d6. I find that watching Rapport has inspired me to push my h...

Jack / Alan

Apologies I misread and conceivably misunderstood one of the two performance rating gains, and as Alan rightly points out +2.4 is a decent performance.

Re: Graz Open 12th to 19th February 2016

John, for the benefit of those of us less familiar with junior chess, can you perhaps enlighten us as to why these performances are particularly noteworthy? Do they meet performance targets/objectives set by anybody with oversight for junior chess? To the uniformed these seem relatively modest gains...

Re: The plans for the Grading System

I'm still not sure after all these pages exactly what proportion of chess players would benefit from changes to the frequency of publishing grades. So far as I can see, leagues will in the main prefer to determine eligibility at a fixed point and retain that for the duration of the season. So are we...

Re: Cavendish-Wood Green (14/01/2016)

Can the ECF Club of the Year award be purchased then? Leaving aside the debate about what constitutes a club which has been covered in threads elsewhere, I understood the award to be made on the merits of the submissions made in the year in question. Who knows where Wood Green would stand in that re...

Re: ECF AGM aftermath

I've no idea about his merits and/but welcome any ongoing commitment to chess but asking our delegate/representative if he can attend our AGM without going into details is a tad odd. I don't want an apologia. We have other things to get on with... [ Speaking in a personal capacity ]
