Re: 4NCL 2023-24 Division Three Knights
Division 3 is tough with most of our match losses being close. I am not aware of any mercenaries at this level. Here is a short write-up of the CSC/Kingston squad at the weekend. Irrespective of the mixed results, the players enjoy the experience not least for the social aspects.

Re: J M Craddock - King Edward's School, Birmingham?
Sultan Khan played at Kingston Chess Club. Unfortunately our record books only go as far back as the late 1930s by which time he had moved on.

Re: J M Craddock - King Edward's School, Birmingham?
The last game played in England by GM Sultan Khan was against Craddock in 1933, according to the records of ChessGames.com. Khan was playing for the Imperial Chess Club and Craddock was playing for Cambridge University. Craddock, aged 20, won convincingly. https://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?g...

Re: Major investment to transform future of English chess announced
What would help is if each table (or group of tables) were to be adopted by a chess club. Many club members would be delighted to play at the table from time to time and engage with members of the public. There is nothing worse than putting a table in an out-of-the-way corner with few passers-by. Lo...

Re: Martin Cath
I took over from Martin as Tournament Controller for Surrey. It was only after I had done so that I realised what a substantial amount of work he had undertaken. Martin made a major contribution to Surrey Chess over many decades. I attach a photo taken at the funeral of Bill Waterton, another Surrey...

In a nutshell We observed that certain cognitively stimulating activities were associated with a lower risk of incident dementia among 10 318 older individuals who had reached age 70 years in generally good health and without major cognitive impairment. In particular, a higher frequency of engagemen...

Today I received two emails from ChessMoves substack. On trying to open the esteemed organ, I am informed that I should subscribe to substack and then sign up with six (!) other accounts. Having done so, I try to sign in to read ChessMoves only to be informed that the article is restricted to paid s...

Re: Fischer Time Controls and Venues
I'm surprised the defender wasn't able to claim a draw after 50 moves without a pawn being moved (or could they have, but didn't), or even the arbiter declare a draw after 75 moves. Neither the 50- nor the 75-move rule was breached. As it's a difficult ending to play accurately, was the player with...
