Re: Queens Gambit and Netflix

I don't know if there is a thread relating specifically to reviews of this series but having finally got round to taking out a Netflix subscription and watching the series I am tempted to make some comments, which may go against the grain. I had heard a lot of very good things about this and seen a ...

Re: Humorous article in "BCM" or "Chess"

Thanks Jonathan, I will try that all though my vague recollection is that it was in BCM or Chess.

Humorous article in "BCM", "Chess" or "Kingpin"

This may seem a strange request but I have been trying to track down an article from either “BCM” or “Chess”, I think from the early 1980s, but possibly later, and I cannot locate it. It was essentially an article on opening theory but cast in the form of a humorous anecdote. A stranger walks into a...

Re: Test match at Lord's

it would be good to have Foakes back in, if ony because we would then have a team containing "Stokes, Woakes and Foakes". That might confuse the commentators.

Re: FM Mike Franklin (02-ii-1931 25-iv-2023)

I was very sorry to hear of the passing of Michael Franklin at the age of 92. He was a stalwart of English chess and the weekend congress scene when I started playing competitively in the 1970s. Though I did not know him personally and never played him (unsurprisingly since he was always in Opens an...

Re: Splat!

I have managed to upload the game properly at last. I had to delete all commentary to enable it. Tried to delete the previous mangled post but it won't allow me to.

Re: Splat!

A very sharp game that ends in a draw, which I played in correspondence recently. It contains a rare example of the "immortal sacrifice" motif, i.e. the sacrifice of both rooks along the back rank, and moreover is followed by another sacrifice a few moves later. I was compelled to give up the queen ...

Re: Splat!

Stupid question I am sure but how do you upload a game here? I have Chessbase8. Open the game you want to upload, click on copy game, paste into the forum post and then add "pgn" with "[]" either side of "pgn" at the start and the same at the end. I just tried that from Chessbase 16 so hope it work...

Re: Splat!

I have now uploaded this game in an intelligible form by deleting all commentary. Unfortunately the system is not permitting me to delete this post for some reason. I thought one could always delete one's own posts but apparently not. Wood,B (1762) - Twitchell,N (1857) [C11] Sinclair (C&DCCC) Div 2,...

Interesting. Larsen of course was a similarly maverick character.

Re: IM Michael Basman

One point about Mike's chess which has not been mentioned in any of the posts so far, I think, was that in simuls he sometimes took the Black pieces! He is (was) the only master strength player I know of who did (does) this. I don't know if this was habitual or regular on his part, but certainly on ...
