Re: Frank Winter Chess Cup
We sadly lost our eldest brother, Cyril during 2021, he was a keen chess player, and taught chess during his retirement, and we suspect a lot of our Dad’s Chess history, has been lost when we lost him. I'm delighted to have found this thread. Cyril John Winter and I worked together at Elvetham Heat...

That's right we played Mitcham in the Surrey Trophy and Alexander Cup in 1995/96, I played Connor O'Shaughnessy in both matches.John Saunders wrote: ↑Mon Jan 22, 2024 3:35 pm
I recall him playing for Cobham in a few matches with Mitcham in the 1990s.

Re: K. W. Lloyd
Thanks for the identification of Cobham, we played them occasionally, I suspect when Redhill fell into Division 2. I now realise that R1 probably meant Redhill match, board 1. I also played DE Lloyd (in 1975) - I think he played for RAE Farnborough? I played Ian Pheby (8 Jan 1996) in the Surrey Tro...

Re: K. W. Lloyd
Yes, I played alongside Ken W Lloyd and Alan K May at Cobham. I believe they played together for Richmond & Twickenham in the 1960s/1970s. Both well over 200 in those days. In 1962 Ken was graded 2b and in the top 10 in England. No recent news I'm afraid. Interesting story of an adjudication he had ...

Re: SCCA Challenge Cup
I hope the spelling of RP Michell (top left) is correct - it's a bit difficult to read! Having been involved in chess organization for a while, I have noticed that a lot of minute-takers make extraordinary typos, with some of them not having heard of players they ought to have done. Or they were in...

*mumble* check your primary sources *mumble* Seriously, where did the "R. J. Blackburn" error come from? Was it first seen in the post by Paul D at the start of this thread or was it widely reported as such elsewhere? Paul, where did your list come from? The SCCA website? It would genuinely be inte...

Re: SCCA Challenge Cup
Sounds like Reginald John Blackburn is a non-starter. Here's a suggestion from out of left field - Reginald Joseph Broadbent. His bio on chessgames.com says "He was Northern Counties Champion 1933-46, the Surrey champion 1947 , and the British champion in 1948 and 1950". This was taken from the Yor...
