Re: National Schools - Girls Competitions 2016/7

St Catherine's hosted a superb event again this year. Over 200 competitors was a sight to behold. The staff at the school do everything they can to help ensure players and supporters have a great day out. There's a welcome party and a free lunch for absolutely everyone on the premises. It's lovely t...

Re: Appeal for Board Support

Hi It might not be of much consolation to you because I am nothing to do with the Board, and I have not followed what has gone on with Ray Keene, but as a player I find that you and Lara have controlled the British Championships excellently whenever I have played in recent years. Indeed Alex, you we...

Re: What is the result if his flag falls

In (2), if you have the lone K and just a few seconds, then you will ineveitably lose on time. A draw offer does not help you unless you have enough time to make lots of moves I would hope that a 10.2 claim with a lone king against a king and two knights would succeed. The position cannot be won by...

Re: What is the result if his flag falls

1.I grew up believing that K+N was not mating material but now I believe it is if you are v K+N (or something similar). 2.It follows that I grew up believing that K+2N was not a win v K if K flag fell but if you had K+2N v K+ P then you win if K+P flag falls. The point seems to me that I grew up be...

Re: The future - 2011 and beyond.

... ...I realise that this all takes a lot of work and I am sure that people are doing what they can with the resources that they have but I still think that the emphasis should be on playing rather than coaching although I am obviously happy to help with coaching wherever I can. Sean Hewitt is try...

Re: What is the result if his flag falls

3. What about K+B v K+R+P and K+R+P flag falls, does K+B win on time because of underpromotion and helpmate? Does it depend on the type of tournament? (e.g. standard play, rapid, British, International...) Yes it wins as the P could be promoted to a N (or B if of opposite colour). This applies to a...

Re: The future - 2011 and beyond.

I believe that coaching and training is essential (especially for juniors) ... ... Then why not set up a coaching session for players in your area? You contact the 11-14 year olds in your area to find out interest. Depending on how many you get depends on how many coaches you need to contact but it...

Re: The future - 2011 and beyond.

While laudable, we have to remember that times and attitudes of young people have moved on from the 1970s. I think the chess circuit Graeme Buckley was referring to was in the 1980s and early 1990s, not just the 1970s. Yes, I don't think that there were quite so many opportunities to play by the mi...

Re: Junior Selection Policy

Under the current selection system Felix would have to qualify at the World Youth trial ad through the grand prix so as he lives in Venezuela it is doubtful if he would be able to qualify anyway. As regards eligibility while he is on the rating list as English he is eligible to play. Thanks for that.

Re: Junior Selection Policy

I don't know if this has come up anywhere, but I believe that Felix Ynojosa and family are no longer living in this country and I question whether Felix should be eligible to take a 'British' place at European or World tournaments in future. It was mentioned fairly recently: http://www.ecforum.org....

Re: The future - 2011 and beyond.

I repeat that I think that the emphasis needs to be on tournaments. Apart from my wife, is there anybody out there that remembers what it used to be like? Take the Open at the Classic. Much work has been done to put this event on and it is excellent but you will still find half of the competitors a...
