Re: Starter for ten

Fans of University Challenge might appreciate the chess-playing representation on this year's series: FM Ryan Rhys Griffiths captaining Wolfson, Cambridge against St John's, Oxford: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=43nMAIbaNGo And, somewhat less exaltedly, yours truly captaining Magdalen, Oxford agai...

Re: Batumi Olympiad

It has gone pear-shaped on board two as well (for McShane). Can we be quite so sure? McShane has sacrificed his queen for 2 pieces and some pressure; the computer is always going to dislike such sacrifices, and we haven't really had enough moves since then to judge whether or not it's working out i...

Re: British Championship 2018

Meanwhile, on sub-2050-watch, Daniel Young has just tenderised another IM to move onto 4.5/8.

EDIT: impressive levels of cross-posting there

Re: British Championship 2018

Now that there are only 2 rounds to go, is it possible to find out which players have chances of a norm?

It's worth pointing out that there is a distinction between "trolling" and "arguing for views which are contrary to those you hold".

With 1 (and a bit) round to go, does anyone know if any norms are possible?

Jessel needs 1/1 for an IM norm.
Although, given that he appears to have accumulated 4 IM norms already, he might not mind too much.

Re: Irish IM Norm Event

With the final two rounds to go, are there any norms still possible? In the GM section, Sam Collins leads on 5.5/7, although he has a tough final day against 2 of the GMs; there might also be some IM norms sneaking under the radar in the GM section. The IM section looks rather less promising for nor...

Re: Chess.com

Hello! Oddly enough, I had exactly the same situation about a month ago. I had 8 players and needed to sort them into two 4-board teams for a competition. A few of the players had chess.com ratings, which they gave. From personal experience, I've always found that the standard on chess.com (relative...

Glancing briefly over at the FIDE Open side of things, does anybody know which players may be on track for a norm?

Re: The Grob. Bring it back

RA Barton - KJ Thurlow, Islington 1976 (5) went 1.d4 Nf6, 2.g4 Nxg4, 0-1 in 51. Possibly not unique. A club mate also suggested this or perhaps it was 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. g4. Unless you can persuade players of such stuff to enter events where games are preserved for posterity, such novelties will...

Re: 2nd GM norm for Daniel Fernandez

I note that Carl appears to have his 3 IM norms already - 2 on the FIDE database, plus the recent Tralee Classic result.
