Re: Peter Poobalasingam
:(( Such awful news.. Fortunate enough to talk with him a few times at work - I only ever heard nice things about him from other colleagues and immediately understood why upon meeting him - a kind, genuine, humble person clearly brimming with talent. Truly heartfelt condolences to his family and fri...

Re: Moon Landing
Surely everyone knows that the moon landings were fake, JFK was assassinated by the CIA, 9/11 was an inside job and they have extraterrestrial technology secreted inside Area 51... ... and that Elvis is still rocking and rolling on the Shangri-La club circuit, cheered on in the audience by S...

Re: Does chess involve to much politics?
Politics is much broader than democracy which is merely one type of political arrangement. Wikipedia again provides a good definition: 'It consists of social relations involving authority or power.' As such almost all human relationships are in part political. As for Switzerland, it certainly has m...

Re: Does chess involve to much politics?
The first step in a debate is the definition of terms, ie what do we mean by 'chess' and what do we mean by 'politics'. Okay probably what we mean by 'chess' is classical chess, but this throws up the problem of how we arrive at a world champion? Then what is the meaning of 'politics' first thought...

Re: Does chess involve to much politics?
Harry was commenting in the context of the paucity of women in chess; and by and large, past adolescence women are the gentler s*x and more likely to be put off by gesture swearing and general coarseness, and that is the impression of chessplayers that this thread risks giving. I don't believe that...

Re: What is a constitution?
We are told by the people that decide what is right and what is wrong in our culture, that if you are American you have a written constitution that lays out your rights and your responsibiltys but in England we are told we have a constitutional Monarch, what I would love to know is how the queen ga...

Re: Does chess involve to much politics?
Yes, I agree about more troubles in the world, but that doesn't mean we all have to drop standards to the lowest common denominator. I was merely giving an opinion that I don't feel this forum is the place for such comments. If others disagree that's fine, but therefore why bother putting the *** -...

Re: Does chess involve to much politics?
There's also a road in Norfolk called Slutshole Lane which I find quite amusing. Seriously though, those people who are offended by a 'naughty' word need to find some perspective; there are a lot more troubling things in the world to get upset about than A WORD. Jeeez  Back to the topic, seein...

Re: Does chess involve to much politics?
I feel that the little politics that goes on in my club (that I'm aware of) is just about enough to confirm that the members are indeed humans. 'Man is a political animal' - Aristotle Although, I'm not sure that Matt's simple disagreement should necessarily be defined as political - politics is con...

Re: World Youth Chess Championships 20-30 October
Why? What is their in Greece that would be better for James' chess development? I think he is in absolutely the right place and congratulations on his results so far. Surely there is the chance to experience a World Championship with the honour and prestige associated with representing one's countr...
