Re: Counties and clubs
There will be lots of clubs like this. I guess most will be due to ease of travel and/or to give members more games. If a club is near a border between two counties it might choose to play in more than one league. For example:- Worksop, in north Nottinghamshire, play in Yorkshire and I can't remembe...

Re: Active/Inactive/Deceased/Merged ?
Why doesn't a deceased player's grading entry appear on team lists and can only be accessed directly by typing the player's name?

Re: Major investment to transform future of English chess announced
My city is getting two of them at a cost of £2500 each.
They will be situated in 2 different parks, one in a small inner city park about 15 minutes walk away from our congress venue, and one in a larger park not far from me. I guess the latter will get a lot of use by the ducks from the pond.

Re: 46th Scarborough Chess Congress
When I am looking on chess results these annoying full page adverts fill the screen. Why?

Re: Updating ECF rating data.
I've spotted two players from the same Nottinghamshire club in the 85 years + top players who are very much alive and nowhere near 85 years old.

Apologies. For some reason I didn't see the other one. Feel free to merge them.

Mindsports GM Super Swiss Open
In the final round Ankush's GM opponent defaulted. Was Ankush on course to get a norm and did this default deprive him of the chance of getting it? If so that seems pretty crap to me, considering how hard people try to get these norms. Has this sort of thing happened before and was the affected play...

Re: Membership Query
A mate who was Bronze until 31 Aug 2023 decided to renew as Silver. Instead of renewing him to 31 Aug 2024 it only gave him to 31 July 2024 (it did refund him 1 month's Bronze). Therefore if you wish your membership to expire after 31 Aug 2024 but you want to move to a different level you should wai...

Re: ECF Membership Reform
As mentioned before, I would prefer to see Bronze and Silver merged to encourage Bronze members to try Congress chess, but the board seems not to have even considered this option. Anyway... Under the current system Bronze members who pay £9 extra to play in a Congress are automatically upgraded to S...

Re: ECF Membership Reform
Why the obsession with FIDE chess?
The ECF could abolish Gold and simply allow Silver level members, at the current price, to play in STD FIDE rated events as we can in RP events. Then gradually close the gap between Bronze and Silver over a few years until we have just one level for everyone.

Re: ECF Membership Reform
I didn't' realise Mike's idea above included FIDE rated games. However, if I wanted to play FIDE rated games I would become a Gold member. Currently I don't, so I'm happy to remain at Silver. I would be interested to know during the past few pre lockdown seasons how many Bronze members upgraded to S...

Re: ECF Membership Reform
I don't know what the current proposals would be but one idea would be: Club/ league players (only): £20 Congress players (only): £20 Play in both: £40. This would remove what seems to be a minor injustice to some congress players (those who only play in congresses) under the current system. So we ...

Re: Possible ECF membership changes
It's only the first year of operation but isn't the anniversary of Bronze being 1st September and the anniversary of Silver and Gold whenever you want it to be going to cause problems, particularly if there's an ambition to amalgamate? It would be exactly the same as it is now. Whatever level you t...

Re: Possible ECF membership changes
The paper omits the most obvious option; merge Bronze and Silver. I imagine that is where the majority of admin occurs currently for players, organisers and the ECF office, when Bronze members enter a weekend event. I'm guessing that far more Bronze members upgrade to Silver than Silver members upgr...

Re: Mark Whitehead RIP
Really sad news. I played in the same team as Mark during the 1984-85 season in Leicester. He and I enjoyed many a pint that season. In September 2002 I was at the NEC watching Deep Purple and felt a tap on my shoulder. By pure coincidence Mark, who I hadn't seen since 1985, was in the seat behind me!
