Re: Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz 2017

The sort of game that makes the loser want to give up chess (or at least go back into retirement!).

Re: I wanna become a GM

It is quite common for the "FIDE Titles (year)" field to be blank for titled players, especially those who got their titles before the modern era. Can anyone who can be bothered (using the download) check how many titled players have this field blank?

Re: Pawn Sacrifice (Bobby Fischer film)

An update on this, over a year-and-a-half later: http://variety.com/2017/film/global/tobey-maguire-amazon-pawn-sacrifice-1202520637/ "“Pawn Sacrifice” will launch on Amazon’s U.K. Prime Video on August 13, the first time the streaming service has had a movie day and date with its theatrical rel...

Re: British Chess Championship Daily Reports

Abrahams was a pretty good writer, though he may seem a bit dated in some respects to modern eyes. Was he was also a contributor to the BBC's chess radio programme of the early 60s, later captured in book form as "Chess Treasury of the Air"? (edit)of the Air (/edit) Of the items published...

40...Rxf3 wasn't so great though. I can understand in some ways why Aronian played this instead of 40...Bg2+, but it feels like he bottled out of the logical conclusion to the combination he started with 33...Nxf3.

Re: British Chess Championship Daily Reports

The Abrahams book has historical tit-bits scattered all the way though it. I have a copy of The Chess Mind by Gerald Abrahams, but that doesn't seem like a beginner's book. It is part of the 'Teach Yourself Books' series, but did he do more than one of those? I've had a quick look through and nothi...

Re: 5th Sinquefield Cup 2-12 August 2017

Caruana-MVL now drawn so just Carlsen-Nakamura left with white having an extra pawn but I suspect a draw. Carlsen is suppised to have missed a mate on 26 by neglecting to play h5. It is past midnight here so I shall not be seeing if he gets another chance. It looks like he won't (get another chance...

He was Royal Navy chess champion and President of the Combined Services Chess Association. Re: British Championship Congress 2017

Is there a list of norms gained? Did Conor Murphy get an IM norm? Given that the title of English Champion is shared and not settled by tie-break, it is good to see that Luke McShane and Craig Hanley can call themselves that (Howell has won this before). Though I am not sure how prestigious it is. I...

Re: British Championship Congress 2017

Yeah, Luke must have missed something there. I was convinced we were going to an Armageddon game. Good win by Gawain Jones. His second victory after winning in 2012 at North Shields.

Re: British Championship Congress 2017

Can someone post the start time for the play-off, or post here when they have started? I think it is scheduled for after the prize-giving, so it may be a while yet.

(Jonathan, Jones had White against Hanley - I shall root for Hanley!)
