Re: Candidates Tournament in Berlin March 2018

I have a vague memory of a strong impression that when the rating period that counted for this qualification route began, that Caruana had a relatively high rating (2827) and appeared to sit on that rating (or a similar one) for the first four months of the year. 2827, 2827, 2817, 2817 for Caruana a...

Re: Candidates Tournament in Berlin March 2018

Out of interest, who is the most active of the world's top players (say, over the past year)? I can see the figures for monthly activity, but how do you get yearly activity? Do you have to add up 12-months-worth of games or is an annual figure given somewhere?

Re: 2017 World Cup 2-27 September, Tbilisi

The two rest days (unless it changed since) are between the QFs and SFs and between the SFs and the Final (which starts with four classical games instead of two):

Re: 2017 World Cup 2-27 September, Tbilisi

Of the quarter finalists, some have played far fewer games. Ding, Rapport, Fedoseev and Svidler have not gone beyond four games in any of their matches. Ding: 2+4+4+2 = 12 games Rapport: 2+4+4+4 = 14 games Fedoseev: 4+2+2+4 = 12 games So: 2+6+2+4 = 14 games Aronian: 2+6+8+2 = 18 games Ivanchuk: 4+6+...

Re: London chess-FIDE open

I get you now. You are saying that it is the Sunday morning round that could be a problem (this was not clear in your initial post, as you talked about the functioning of road and rail transport on the Saturday). And that the registration being a day beforehand could be a problem (quite reasonably, ...

Re: London chess-FIDE open

It is strange that you have to ferret around in the pdf of the rules to find the exact timetable. And I can't even find the pdf of the rules on the website. Where is that? Give the webmaster a chance. By the very nature of these things, one bit of the website has to be done before the other. :) :D ...

Re: London chess-FIDE open

Roger should have said: "Play in the Open is every day at 4:30 pm from Saturday 2nd December to Saturday 9th December with an additional round at 10:00 am on Sunday 3rd December." It is strange that you have to ferret around in the pdf of the rules to find the exact timetable. And I can't ...

Re: Chess.com Isle Of Man Tournament 23 Sep to 1 Oct 2017

Does this new pairing method make it more or less likely that titled players will meet in the first round? Maybe someone can do some calculations as well as comparing to other pairing methods. More seriously, is this a pairing method accepted by FIDE? Can any FIDE-rated Swiss tournament come up with...

Re: 2017 World Cup 2-27 September, Tbilisi

Interestingly (or maybe not), Maxime Vachier-Lagrave is the only person still able to qualify to the Candidates by all three routes (albeit the World Cup is his best practical chance of qualifying).

Re: 2017 World Cup 2-27 September, Tbilisi

Grischuk going out is bad news for anybody who might have hoped third place in the Grand Prix might be good enough. Potentially that was quite a few players. Ding Liren is still in it, so if he qualifies by this route (World Cup), and then takes second or first in the Grand Prix, that is another (a...

Re: 2017 World Cup 2-27 September, Tbilisi

[Rapport's] rating chart is interesting 2700chess ; seems to indicate his slide started a year ago; he's +13 for the WC so far (classical rating) at 2688 on the live list If So and Rapport meet in the semi-finals, then Rapport might have an influence on the qualification by rating scenario, if he h...

Re: 2017 World Cup 2-27 September, Tbilisi

Not another one of those tablebase R+P vs B+P endings... Grischuk probably too short of time though. Different time control to the Aronian game. Case in point: Grishuk had seconds to decide between 47.h3 and 47.h4 and chose the wrong one. (EDIT: But some are saying that tablebases give 47.h3...

Re: European Youth Chess Championship 2017

A win would guarantee second place, which would still be a great result.

What is the tie-break if Ljepic wins?

(PS. You mean 22.Bxa8, surely?)

Re: Chess.com Isle Of Man Tournament 23 Sep to 1 Oct 2017

Assuming they don't accelerate, Keith Arkell will miss out on Carlsen, but may well get a top 6 pairing. So that's where the lower half starts. I had similar thoughts, until someone directed me to read page 3 of the Terms & Conditions. Quoting from here: http://iominternationalchess.com/images/...

Re: Chess.com Isle Of Man Tournament 23 Sep to 1 Oct 2017

The Masters Tournament has a significant late entry. http://iominternationalchess.com/players/masters.html?view=persons So what happened to that waiting list? Good point. That was detailed here (back in June): http://iominternationalchess.com/news-media/news/166-update-masters-entries-closed...
