Re: Reykjavik 2024

A beautiful attack from Matthew to take down Jules Moussard, who sportingly gave him mate on the board. Congrats to him.

Re: Crabbed age

Well, Korchnoi won the Swiss national championship and the Botvinnik Memorial (Seniors) at Suzdal when he was 80, but I can't remember if he had any more tournament wins after those.

Re: J M Craddock - King Edward's School, Birmingham?

I was browsing the December 1948 CHESS Magazine yesterday and spotted that he played board one for Bedfordshire on October 30th 1948, defeating Leonard Illingworth, who was representing Cambridgeshire.

Re: Keres and communism

For the run down on Keres' complicated life, the best source I have found is Sosonko, who devotes a chapter to him in Russian Silhouettes. Quite honestly, it is amazing that he was able to focus on chess at all. We can only imagine how good he would have been if his relationship with the Soviet syst...

Re: Biel MTO 2023

A neat win against a 2410 IM in the final round too. Some silky endgame skills on show. I was amazed he found the top engine move 51.b4 for instance. I definitely wouldn't have.

Just 13 or 14 years of age. Quite a talent!

Biel MTO 2023

A terrific game from Sohum Lohia here in Round 8.

Check it out on Chess24.

Hopefully this link gets you part way there, at least:

Prague Open 2023

Could be worth keeping an eye on this event, which I believe starts 22nd June. For English supporters, I could see Shreyas Royal, James Adair, Lan Yao and Sohum Lohia in the starting line-up. There were also some Scots I think. The top rated player was Elo 2513 (Vojtech Plat), so not such a strong f...

Re: Leonard Barden's Games

John, I must applaud what you have done with Britbase. It seemed so sparse in the early days, but is now filling out nicely. Combing through my notes, a few more tournaments played by Leonard came to light; 3rd Stevenson Mem, Southsea 1951 - 7th-9th, 6.5/10 Twickenham Premier, April 1956 - 5th, 1.5/...

Re: Secondhand chess books

I imagine these are largely analytical books, and am therefore reminded of Daniil Dubov's WCC commentary the other day when he opined that chess books are mostly useless, as modern engines would demonstrate numerous flaws in the text. That comment aside, I too would have passed on those at those pri...

I'm thinking a fair bit of obscure trivia would be known about Duchamp, so he would be my guess.

Re: She Plays to Win 2023

Well done to Geoff, for providing the report and photo above. I had clicked a few minutes earlier on 'Information' at the chess24 site and got sent (on a direct link) to the SPTW website. Once there however, I couldn't find a single mention of this event. I tried under Latest News, News, More News a...

Re: Mihai Suba

Another rating decline that is slightly baffling to me is that of Romain Edouard. Still only 32, he is currently playing at Hastings with an Elo of 2537, but was at his peak, 2702. I find that surprising, even if his recent focus has been more on authoring books. Is it perhaps an example of some pla...

Re: Battle of Britain Trophy

Oh right, I should have remembered the previous discussion, especially as I contributed.

I think it was mainly the whereabouts of the trophy that was on my mind, but looking back at the previous comments, it seems it wasn't in such good shape by the 1970s, so may not be a great loss after all.

Battle of Britain Trophy

Apologies if this has been discussed before and I missed it. Below are a few snippets I found relating to the period 1948-1969, although I have no knowledge of the actual duration of the competition: ------- 1948 ??? Battle of Britain. London ENG – RF Boxall 4/5, DB Pritchard 3.5, G Wood 3, NT Honan...
