Re: Digital SLRs?
I'm contemplating buying a serious Digital SLR camera to replace my Leica M4-2 and various lenses. Any recommendations? Nikon, Canon? As you are currently using an absolutely excellent camera already with various lenses the choice (in my honest opinion) has to be made by handling some cameras in a ...

Re: Engines for Game Analysis
That's a fair point... the GM+IM game suggestion was more for me to practice the analysis process.
I would be really interested to hear what engines people use and why (tactical, positional or other aspect)
Thanks in advance

Engines for Game Analysis
I have read on various forums that engines have different styles for analysis purposes... aggressive, positional play, draw-ish etc. etc. So effectively people have a mix of chess engines to represent "human personalities" and will mix engine choice depending upon either the desired outcome or to co...

Suggestions for online play for novice
Well I have joined a local chess club that meets every Tuesday... I am not graded and got completely wiped out by my contenders (nicely face-to-face, less so on the board) It was suggested that I need to play as frequently as possible with real people online. Two sites got mentioned, Redhot Pawn and...

Chess engine for analysis & which for play?
I know I would never ever get into the position of ever beating an "unleashed" computer chess engine. Curious what people use... as with everything I went though a "buy fest" and purchased Fritz 12, Aquarium 2011 and Chessmaster XI I seem to have settled on Aquarium for general use. I am looking at ...

That's a great narrative on engine analysis... I have printed your posting out to put in my Chess scrapbook. Thanks

Re: How do you recommend I study rather than read?
So pull out a Chernev book. Start with the first game and, taking the side of the winner, cover the moves with a card. Then try to guess the winner's move and write it down, along with some analysis to demonstrate why you think it's the best. Then compare it with the winner's actual move. Do this f...

How do you recommend I study rather than read?
On another thread I started, I have an ever expanding library and now the school holidays are over more time (grin) I could just sit down and read the books in order alongside a portable chess board... but I get the feeling that this would be insufficient. Other than scribbling notes in the margin, ...

Re: I've expanded my library - advice sought on read order
I am so glad I started this topic thread. Just placed an order for "Simple Chess" by Stean, as it seems highly recommended for my ever growing library.
Now the summer holidays are coming to the end, hopefully I can get into studying and join a local club.

Re: recommend a portable chess board
Well thanks for all the suggestions and comments. The one I have plumper for is this one http://www.regencychess.co.uk/8-inch-polished-sheesham-book-style-chess-set-p-239.html On the pictures it looks nice, I can use it for analysis purposes by transporting it between work and home alongside my curr...

If this wasn't an out of stock item, I would've ordered it straight away at that price. thanks for the reasoning Paul, will keep looking and asking for suggestions.Paul McKeown wrote:Guy,
