Re: FIDE General Assembly

There are some merits to those ideas, but I think I'd argue that chess has long since become an abstract and the links to the original concepts don't really mean much to most players.

Re: Actors and Masters

The trick for the first one is probably to pick GMs whose names are reasonably common in their home country and see what a search turns up, and doing this immediately found me this actor: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0914925/

Re: OGWT

My guess would be that OGWT didn't have all that many viewers, but those that it did have were serious music fans, so the bands who appeared on it knew they were likely to get a lot of potential customers from those viewers. The TOTP audience was probably a lot more casual.

Re: Counties and clubs

Barnstaple to Plymouth will be hard to beat, but probably not impossible. They play in the same league? Yes, although Plymouth haven't actually entered any of the competitions this season, and the events this season are jamborees at various venues around the county. Still, Barnstaple did take two t...

Though of course Zukertort probably should not count as an English player if we are being honest.....
Although Blackburne definitely does, so it's a game played by an English player either way.

Re: accepting gambits

I once joint won a tournament with the rare Reversed Swiss Gambit: I won my opening game, and the rest of the top five seeds all drew or took half-point byes, and thus I got to 4/4 without meeting any of them. (My last round game was a draw against Charles Cobb, and his brother won his game to share...

Re: ECF Membership Reform

£18 a year works out as £1.50 a month. I'll repeat that - £1.50 a month! If you just play one game, it's £ 18 a month. There are players in league teams who only play once, admittedly often as reserves to avoid a default. As I'm sure you well know if someone did just play one game there's no requir...

Re: Clock Bangers

Not possible to change the way it's done as this is the feature of the league It is possible to change it - put a proposal to your league's AGM to use an increment system as described by Roger. i'm afraid not. Everyone is set in their ways. There are some games that use the mechanical clocks but mo...

Re: 2nd Cambridge International Open

Whatever it is, here's the relevant information: https://handbook.fide.com/chapter/B012024

To get an IM norm with 6/9 requires an adjusted ARO of 2325 or higher, whereas for a score of 6½, it needs to be 2284 or higher.

Re: 2nd Cambridge International Open

The crossover point's around 200 difference; below that, the Elo system gives higher expected scores than the Clarke system for the stronger player, whereas it's the other way round for higher differences.

Re: 2nd Cambridge International Open

It isn't, no, and you can easily work that out: it's an uplift of 79 points in total, which is (to the nearest integer) 9 points per round, so his effective TPR increases by 9 points to 2409, well short of the 2450 needed.
