Re: British Championships size/format

On paying for any online live coverage whatever the format I would not so the simple reason that I would be working, on holiday or not able to see it. Generally in playing it is difficult to justify to my better half in spending the time in the hotel whilst I play chess. She would rather we go on ho...

Re: The Rookie

On Brian's point I think you can learn a lot from analysing games against weaker players. Chess for Tigers has a good section on grading. I have lost 1 game in 33 years of grading against a player rated more than 50 points below me. I will be seeing Stephen once this week & once next week. Arsha...

Re: British Championships size/format

I voted for Swiss Open. Nothing which cannot be fixed by fees, & accelerated pairings to secure GM or IM norms & working in other countries. It is not as if top players are playing - many prefer the seniors probably because of the shorter time period. Hopefully ECF are asking them the questi...

Re: The Rookie

Stephen plays for my club & previous Surbiton. He also puts a bit more into organising rather than playing. ECF history below. He is busy with his profession much like the rest of us. I have not bought the book but will let him know when I see him next. Ambition & plan is Ok - achievable - l...

Re: ECO Classification Thread

Queens gambit declined - semi-Tarrasch. Position at 8. Bd3 can be arrived at via English, Qgd, caro-kann, Sicilian alapin, alekhine, etc. No need to sweat the small stuff (ECO classification) but great to work out what are typical tabiya after move 10, & later. A Smyslov masterpiece against Karp...

SCCU stages U180

Just got in to here the news that our opposition are short. So looks like Surrey will finish 1st. :D :D Saving on travel, a match fee, & a meal out is fine. Missing a CCF coffee less so. My better half appreciates it - we can either go morning shopping with breakfast out, or late morning shoppin...

Re: Proposed British Chess Championship Qualifying Regulations

Or criminals.
Perhaps there wasn't a arbiters/organisers 'nexus' but some suggestions here of an arbiter 'nexus'.
Best wishes to all trying to progress. And those training others.
Not sure why ECF not using it's budget or making some provision rather than getting individuals to pay.

Re: Division Four South 2016-17

Hopefully they will be playing - organisers are doing a fantastic job. Suspect there will be a lot more quick draws, wins & losses with the 5pm start for Ireland - England Rugby Union Grand Slam hopefully decider. My eldest son, Andrew, will be 27 on 18th March. My ex-wife's waters broke a few h...

Re: ECF grades compared with FIDE ratings

This formula has always been correct. The formula for those with BCF>216 was the one with the minus 1250 & 5. Far more interesting snippets in the rjh open forum on having for example lower graded players in a team to allow more higher graded players in a team with competitions based on average ...

Re: Grand-Prix 2017 Events Venues and Dates confirmed

Only 44 players over 2700 on list. Salem at 99.
May well be other players have better offers. Anyway hopefully these players will get over 2700 by performing well.
Assuming Hammer in as Norway's No.2 player as the No.1 player is WCC.

Re: Division Four South 2016-17

Not sure that is the problem, more likely to be dense, freeing fog as per the BBC Telford weather site & local forecasts - that will limit speeds on the motorway.

Re: Proposed British Chess Championship Qualifying Regulations

On new proposals against current. Current I think excellent that old players as well as young can qualify from one excellent result. It was also what some of us aspired to achieve as reasonable expectation into old age and when children grew up and left home. Looking forward to seeing those older an...

Re: Division Four South 2016-17

To confirm, like Lawrence we (CSC) will only have 1 team playing this weekend in 4s as well as our 1st team in div 2 elsewhere. We expected we would have an issue with Telford at the beginning of the season but hope to be back to 2 teams or 18/19 March. Best wishes on travelling - brief 20 second sn...

Re: Media comments on chess

I think she acted significantly OTT and contrary to rules/laws and lack of sportsmanship to the detriment of all chess players but particular women and young females players.

She is too young to sing or say je ne regrette rien, or regrets, I've had a few, but then again too few to mention.

Re: is the Vienna game sound?

So Chris your conclusion is that the Vienna game is sound as well as fun for White but not Black?
Bearing in mind other options which may be more sound as well as fun?
