Re: Knights facing forwards.
I noticed this year that Henrik Carlsen has his knights facing diagonally inwards, so the g1 knight looks at a7 and the b1 knight looks at h7. I do that. The knights are not looking at a7 and h7 of course, they've got their eyes on the centre, where they want to go. I once had an opponent who reach...

Re: What should happen in this situation?
What do you do if your opponent makes a move, forgets to press his clock, then dashes out of the room for a 'comfort break'? When they come back in the room they might see their clock going and assume you've made a move. Or they could accuse you of fiddling the clock in their absence. All sorts of p...

Computer Go
A computer has just beaten a Go professional 5-0 in a match.
Our Go playing counterparts may be needing some advice soon
about measures to prevent cheating, although I'm sure the Go
world is much more gentlemanly than our game??

Re: July 2014 gradings out
A big pat on the back and thank you to the graders for such a quick turn-around.
Most of my club (Leamington) have stayed roughly the same grade as January.
This despite being relegated (don't know what that indicates).

Me too, which is why I take a bye in the evening.Andrew Bak wrote: I want chess to be enjoyable, spending twelve hours in one day in front of a chess board is not my idea of fun!

Re: Trafford Park Congress Cancelled.
I think it's a real shame that the events have been cancelled. I'll second that. We should all be grateful for people willing to give up their time to organise these things for us, otherwise there'd be no chess at all. I had entered the Birmingham congress and have now received a refund for my entr...

Re: Attention Congress Players
I'm not in it for the money so I favour option 1, but would not object to option 2 for people who like to receive cash. Ideally I would like a small memento of my success, like a small shield or a certificate which wouldn't cost much. As it is, on the few occasions I win something I usually just spe...

Re: Arbiter Question
The rules can't allow witness evidence because witnesses may be friends with one player or may have a vested interest in the reult of the game.

Re: Arkell's Odyssey
I bought a copy in Paignton. I bought it because Keith was signing copies and because I like the chap. When I have played him he has always been polite and friendly, and treated me with respect, despite my lowly grading. I didn't know what to expect from the book but I've read it from cover to cover...

Guardian Chess Column
I was sorry to read today that the Guardian has scrapped its weekly chess column on Tuesdays jointly written by Daniel King and Ronan Bennett. Today is the last one.

Re: Hats at the board
I rarely wear a hat, prefer to dazzle the opponent with the reflection off my extensive forehead! But I take a cap because just occasionally the curtains in school halls we play in don't close properly and we have to put up with bright sunlight creeping across the playing area. Also - does anyone re...

Re: Most Annoying Behaviour?
The only time I've refused to shake hands with my opponent after a game... Simon, I'm always wary of shaking someones hand after they have excused themselves from the board stating that they are "nipping to the loo", then make it back to the board in suspiciously quick time! Worse - they sn...

Re: Algebraic v Descriptive (Something of a dinosaur)
I too found it really difficult to change, 20 years ago, and still make mistakes. Mind you I probably made mistakes using descriptive in the past! It is worth the effort, just so you can discuss the game with young whippersnappers (anyone under 50) who don't understand descriptive.

Re: Starting Black's clock at start of game
Of course you have to make a move before pressing Black's clock. The game has begun. Imagine if it is (say) White's 20th move, with Black away from the board, and White just pressed Black's clock without moving!! Same rule applies to the first move as any other. I would say that if White absent-mind...
