Re: What have the ECF ever done for us!
The ECF rating policy is that either the whole event is submitted for rating or that no results are submitted. Thanks, Brian. That is what I had always assumed and I was disturbed to see people ( I think ) suggesting otherwise. It seems to me, if the ECF 's policy is not followed, that deflationary...

Re: Britbase and a 1967 Look and Learn
The battle of Salamanca (1812) was prolonged by a lack of artillery ammunition for Team Wellington. Hence Tchaikovsky had to write music for a different battle. Not a good year for the French army. Hello Kevin. Are you sure you're not getting Beethoven's Battle Symphony mixed up with Tchaikovsky's ...

Re: Arbitration question
In the scenarios presented by Tim, it seems to me that the arbiter should never remind a player of the early start. FIDE law 12.6. year 2023. The arbiter must not intervene in a game except in cases described by the Laws of Chess. SNIP ------------------------------------------------------- The arbi...

Re: What's the answer to this?
So there is no definitive answer? The definitive answer, as others have already explained, is that it's a draw. FIDE article 6.9 - " ... the game is drawn if the position is such that the opponent cannot checkmate the player’s king by any possible series of legal moves" applies here. The draw propo...

Re: Chess Go Spinny
I don't think we could find the exact cause but a general statement would be that Chessbase was halted before all the necessary files had saved. I have accidentally done this when I wished to shut my PC down by using the route START - POWER - SHUTDOWN. It then warned me that, amongst others, the Che...

Re: Chess Go Spinny
I may know the answer to this. First of all to get my bearings do you ever a) edit database files with a WP editor like Notepad ? b) open another separate engine program such as Rybka while chessbase is open? c) have you ever used the game history option while in the database path windows ?

Its similar to the use of the expression "The Preface" by Arbiters.

Re: Arbiting Question
Michael White/Roger de Coverley The points remains that spurious claims can still be dismissed by consideration of intent. The reason I pointed out the latest law revisions from Jan 2018 is that the definition of intent is now taken to be different from earlier law versions. 4.2.1 Only the player h...

Re: Time Ladies and Gentlemen Please!
Nearer to home for Nick, the current FIDE title regulations mention adjudication but only to say that games so decided cannot be used for title applications ! (Regulation 1.42c). This statement was in the regulations both before and after 2009. I pointed this out to some of the adjudication hunters ...

Sorry to spoil the fun but Roger has already made 20005 posts. There is a software bug in the system, which gives two different totals.
