Re: SCCA Challenge Cup

Ron Harris will celebrate his 80th birthday next month, which means that Nick Argyris is now the oldest living Surrey Champion, as he is already 80 years of age.

IIRC, Argyris represented England in the 1961 Glorney Cup, which suggests a birth year of c1943-44.
No wonder I didn't find it...

Re: ECF Membership Reform

Personally, I think we should have in introductory level for new players to OTB chess. Say £5 or £10, with 3 months free chess, before screwing them for full membership and club membership etc. This is because I think there is so much data missing from the grading database, and this would be an idea...

Re: Martin Cath

I was very sad to hear the news of Martin's death. One of the highlights of playing South Norwood was that Martin would enjoy his game whether he won or lost, and he was always welcoming to the away team whether or not he was playing in the match. He was a true gentleman and it was fitting that one...

Re: Michel Memorial Trophy

I would imagine the trophy was named after RP, (who played for Middlesex), but maybe both of them. Assuming the Surrey CCA Minutes still exist, someone will have to read them all. I would have thought information like that should be maintained. The rumour I heard, was Steve White of Streatham had t...

Re: SCCA Challenge Cup

For those interested the 3rd tier is the Felce Cup started in 1922 and the 4th tier the Wernick Cup also 1922. You can probably guess who they are named after. Several players have won 2 out of the 4 events, but only one I could find having won 3 of them KEENE, Raymond Dennis 1962 Wernick Cup (club ...
