Re: Lost Souls ?
Recently watched a 1952 b/w film called 'Mandy' In it the grandfather is playing correspondence chess and when he opens one letter he calls it 'a typical German move' (what ever that is.) he had three sets with different positions set up on them. Boards all the right away around.

Fujitsu as a Sponsor?
That is OK. Someone should approach them, they could do with some good PR just as long as they do not insist we use one of their programs to make the pairings.

I am watching the the T.V. quiz programme 'Ridiculous' one of the contestants called Jack (not our Jack ) is on with his father Gavin. Jack says he comes from I think it was Devon and has played chess for his county. They are currently leading with £450.00.

Re: Alfred Milner Manchester - any relation with Milner Barry or Sir Alfred Milner
I see the forum has come through again! Well done boys! Gerard's excellent find regarding chess computers reminded me of a cartoon that appeared in CHESS in 1946. https://www.redhotpawn.com/imgu/blog/1/b4u437199-1492007113.png “I take a poor view of that ‘mediocre’ remark of yours, Mountbatten.” It ...

Re: Media comments on chess
Sadly, when I contacted Bishop's Move a long time ago, they were uninterested in the possibility of chess sponsorship. Written in Tenerife. https://www.bishopsmove.com/media/cieevhh0/europeanremovals.png?width=500&height=262.6953125 Hi Stewart, I've often thought of contacting them to ask if in the...

Re: Media comments on chess
Latest Private Eye has a Bishop's Move removals van on the cover. And a chess diagram on page 30 referring to eight-year-old girls and double-eight-year-old darts players. Hi Tim, I was going to join in on the current darts thread saying how long, like chess, will it be before we see good darts pla...

Re: Christmas Eve incident in a rock bar
:( Hi Andrew, I recall reading that, (good book that one). Alastair White tells of a time when his team were a player short for match v a Glasgow club. They took a non-playing flat mate with them and taught them the moves in the car and the first few moves of the Pirc and offer a draw. He says the d...

Re: Christmas Eve incident in a rock bar
Hi Alistair, Yes UDS, (Ultra Data Systems?) They had the same teams for many years, the two Condies, Don Heron, Eric Smith and Norman Macleod the problem composer. I cannot recall their board 6. Did you ever play for them? I played v the University in the same place. Not sure of the band but it a bi...

Hi Roland.
I noticed this as well (but not in the Japan Times!) I recalled Magnus did a deal with Puma.
So it appears he is sponsoring sneakers he is not allowed to wear.

Hi John,
I see Kevin did a bit if an edit. I bet he thinks I'm a grumpy old sod.
So I did hit it after the edit and 'scrolled down' the picture of the horse is amazing.

Re: Media comments on chess
And what else are are we going to see if we 'scroll down a bit' I've noticed this is a common trait here. A link and nothing else. I think we should be given a hint of what is in store if we go channel hopping. I know when I give a link it also has a suggestion of what it is about. So on principle I...

Re: Media comments on chess
HI John, I think we are still in the 'Chess in the media' fold. You said 'I had.' does that mean you went to Hastings during the congress for your honeymoon. I went to Scarborough but sadly not during a chess tournament The most famous mention of chess with Hancock is the Radio Ham with him making i...

Re: Media comments on chess
Thanks Stewart, That ticks my box to learn something everyday. (Now I'll have to fit that into a joke.) I've used up a Christmas gift token on a selection of Tony Hancocks DVD's. Not the famous ones, The Radio Ham and Blood Donor etc I got those years ago. This is a selection of lesser known episode...
