The e-mail to captains also had this text:

"Once the allocation of teams to divisions has been finalised we hope to be in a position to issue entry guidelines in early/mid-July. We anticipate that we’ll give teams from last season first dibs for a couple of weeks, before opening up entry more generally on a ‘first come first served’ basis. We expect the total number of teams we can accommodate to be around 80."

The 4NCL website now has their 23-24 main rules and entry guidelines on the homepage. Entry deadline and payment of entry fees is August 16th.

Has the 4NCL had a problem collecting fees from teams in the past? The penalty for not paying a £5/£10 wildcard registration fee on time, for example, is now forfeiture of the next weekend's matches and a further penalty ranging from £150 to £750, depending on the division the team is in.

At a glance it seems like the new rules stem from the fact there have been multiple defaults from various teams over the last few seasons and it is probably to ensure that team managers treat the league with more seriousness by facing much more severe sanctions - there are less places available then before so the 4ncl presumably wants to ensure that all of them are filled and by the most committed of players.
Lose one queen and it is a disaster, Lose 1000 queens and it is just a statistic.

If the aim is to reduce defaults then introducing new rules that result in teams being defaulted for administrative infringements is a strange way to go about it.

I think because it makes it more of a critical issue to get your wildcard players locked in early rather then as a last minute thing - obviously this isn't really that fair to the captains who often get defaults dumped on them without any real chance to do anything about it but it should aleviate some of the problems as they will be much less likely to register flakey players on the off chance they are available and more committed ones will get their opportunity.

The Manticores have merged with the Average Woodpushers and are now the Greater Manchester Woodpushers, with 3 teams

"Average Manchester Woodpushers" did not appeal, then?

With possibly one update to go the current list has 68 teams who have entered and paid for the 2023-24 season: https://www.4ncl.co.uk/data/2324/runners_riders.htm

Just received from Mike Truran:

"We’re now past the entries deadline and we’ve had a few withdrawals/a few teams who haven’t re-entered so far.

So if any captains/managers are interested in entering teams above the number they had last season they should feel free to do so."
