Sadly for him, Alan Merry lost his last round game to Aussie GM David Smerdon.

The final positions were 1-3 Marcus Harvey, Mark Hebden, David Smerdon 6/7, 4-5 Gawain Jones, Alan Merry 5½, etc. Click here to see the final table.

I'll be reporting on the weekend's activities in due course.

For me the highlight of the weekend had to be my mini-match against Gawain (round 1 on both days). Unsurprisingly I was unable to make a result, though I felt I came close in the second game.
True glory lies in doing what deserves to be written; in writing what deserves to be read.

Can anyone explain this conundrum? It's from the Team Rapidplay, Round 5...

It looks likely that Black should go on to win this, and indeed that was the result originally shown by the electronic board. However, the score given at the website shows it was a draw. It seems improbable that Black should have drawn in this precise position. I'm wondering if some further moves were played to reach a draw but which were truncated as a result of an electronic board malfunction. Any ideas?

Isaac told me that he accepted the draw offer here because he was behind on time and while he had seen a few ways to mess it up he had not seen a simple clear win - although it did not take him long to find one after the game. Possibly a timid decision, but I expect he thought better safe than sorry.

Paul - thanks for letting me know. In team chess it is often better to be safe than sorry!

I would have thought the match of the tournament was in round 4...

Bucks Juniors 143 C.S.C. 6 136
421 w Foster, Chantelle L 171 0 - 1 Clark, Robert G 174
422 w Maddox, Thomas 131 0 - 1 Williams, Winston 182
423 b Bains-Gillespie, Ethan 136 1 - 0 May, Natasha 45
424 b Bains-Gillespie, Ethan 136 0 - 1 Kirkland, Chris 143 e

the 2 board simul should surely have garnered some respect especially in a rapidplay
