4NCL 2013-14 (first weekend)

Post by Christopher Kreuzer » Sat Nov 16, 2013 11:26 pm

Have just been looking through the results for round 1 of the 4NCL:

http://www.4nclresults.co.uk/4ncl/1/1a/export/
http://www.4nclresults.co.uk/4ncl/1/1b/export/
http://www.4nclresults.co.uk/4ncl/1/2a/export/
http://www.4nclresults.co.uk/4ncl/1/2b/export/
http://www.4nclresults.co.uk/4ncl/1/3s/export/
http://www.4nclresults.co.uk/4ncl/1/3n/export/

As far as I can tell, the established teams have won as expected and the promoted teams have not managed any wins, though I may have missed something. A couple of individual results stand out. Good to see what look like a number of new teams in division 3.

Agreed drawn - but black had a win in the final position - but would he have found it?

Not sure if anybody has heard of him, but a player named Adam Ashton beat glenn flear in quite a nice game today.

Of course, Adam plays for Urmston in the Manchester League and came up through the 3Cs system - nice guy, good player

Yes, second that on both counts.

I seem to recall from a previous conversation on here that Adam has at least one IM norm, though perhaps a few years old.

3Cs actually have now generated a 'diaspora', one aspect of which is players from their junior system now turning out on the top boards for other Manchester clubs - apart from Adam, Alex Longson, currently playing for Marple in the Manchester League, is an example. And Stephen Gordon has been known to return to play the occasional league match, though I suspect not this season.

In round 1 I found an improvement over 1 e4:
31 e4 checkmate 8)

I always knew there was a good reason to start d4 or Nf3 rather e4. Still I guess 1 e4 followed by e4 checkmate is possible - I wonder if that has ever happened?

All of the games from the weekend are now online, with apologies for the delay in yesterday's Division 1 games.

I quite liked the Williams-Rogers in Round 2 Division 1b. It was a very wild 23 moves...

Ah yes, I'd neglected to FTP that to the site for some reason. :?

But it's there now. :)

A slightly bizarre observation, but all the matches in div2 B seem to be incredibly close. This must be unusual?

It is pretty usual in div2 for there to be no one team dominating. On paper it is the most balanced division in the league so all matches should, theoretically, be quite close.
