National diversity in 4NCL

Post by Christopher Kreuzer » Tue May 03, 2016 12:51 pm

Does anyone have any statistics relating to the amount of national diversity in the 4NCL over the years since it was founded in 1993, or an easy way to generate such statistics? Maybe gender diversity as well. If there are lists of the players that took part (not just registered) each season, it should be possible to generate such statistics.

I was wondering this after looking at the details of the GM norm obtained at the 4NCL in the 2010-11 season by Jonathan Hawkins (see here) and also the GM norm he obtained at the British Championships in 2011 (see here). Both failed the 'foreigner' requirement to be a norm, leading to Jonathan's much-documented attempt to get his third and final norm (achieved three years later in 2014 at the PokerStars Isle of Man tournament). Other places he achieved norms with too many ENG players included Hastings.

I believe it can still be difficult to meet a federation-diverse field at Hastings or the British Championships, but would it be right to say that the 4NCL has sufficient numbers of non-ENG players that this is now much less of a problem (see the norms documented in this thread)? It seems that from around 2013 or 2014 onwards, the number of non-ENG titled players participating in the 4NCL has been higher than in previous years. Anecdotally, does that feel about right?
