Why did so many players have a bye in round 3?

Surely they could sample ALL the nightlife after round 2 and still get back for the start of round 3?

The control team mused over this one at the time. The round times were the same as they'd been since I played in it in 2006. The venue has been the same for a few years now. If you attended the same event in 2009 and 2010, you wouldn't have told them apart. We had far more players last year in round 3 under the same conditions.

In short, we haven't the foggiest. :?

I assume there were three games on the Saturday?

Not really, I've been to lots of tournaments with three games on a Saturday, but I've never seen that high a percentage of byes. The only comparable example I can think of is the Friday night game at Yeovil. As Alex points out it hasn't happened in previous years, so it is probably just a coincidence.

Kidlington on the first February weekend (with some of the same players) was relatively quiet on the Saturday night round as well.

It's not flagged on the cross-table, but the U145 has junior and veteran prizes, the eligible players being marked up on the wall chart. Veterans outnumbered juniors. That isn't unusual in the Kidlington bottom section, since I've noticed it in previous years.

The number of byes did cause a practical problem: In Round 5, someone in the Major on 2/4 had to have a bye because everyone else below him had already had one.

Spectrum events with 3 games on Saturday usually have a half empty hall on Saturday night. On one occasion, all 8 players in the top section took a bye! Half point byes in a 5 round event are a pain though, as sometimes it is difficult to avoid a 1-3 colour split.

There seemed to be a lot of byes on the Saturday night at the Worcester tournament last July. In fact, after a struggling to a draw after a long game I wish I'd done the same myself
