Stockport Rapidplay Jan 2013 at the Alma Lodge

Post by David Pardoe » Sat Feb 02, 2013 12:58 pm

Yet again this annual event, which has been run continuously by Stockport Chess club, under the guiding hand of Peter Taylor and his team, for the past 20 years, was a notible success and most enjoyable chess fayre...
The venue proved very comfortable, although the early 9.30am start did mean difficulties for some coming on trains from Yorkshire and further afield. BR are not particularly noted for running good services on a Sunday... so numbers were a little down, and recent snowy weather probably also effected numbers....and the FA Cup 4th Round clashes no doubt distracted some locals. Rochdale 3 Liverpool 2 ...you couldnt make it up... And Brentford 2 Chelsea 2 was another upset to the form books. They had TV on in the bar area so that provided some light relief from the chess battles going on next door..
Nontheless, a healthy attendance of some 130 players entered the four sections and did battle in this event...which caters for players of all standards, and included a good number of juniors. The usual squash buckling battles ensued as the clocks ticked away the minutes, leading to some bazzar and highly entertaining games. Moves you could not imagine possible were unleashed in the time scrambles and quick response battles. Six rounds of unpredictable chaos for some...but jolly good fun and entertainment. Not to be missed..and a great entry point into the world of local chess competition for many, ....it is always good to see new faces appear at these events, as well as to meet some old friends and catch up with news and gossip between the rounds.

So to the results....

:D :D :D :D
Rochdales day will come.....
PS It`s not my day for football... Went to see Stockport County v Nuneaton. It finished 3-2 to County, but I missed the first four goals, due to late arrival (10 mins after the KO...). Three of the goals were scored as I walked from my car to the ground.
But I did see the winner in the second half.... !!

As a slight aside..
Many chess bodies and Congress organisors are looking to recruit new Arbitors, and the MCCU are running an Arbitor course this coming weekend at Litchfield for those interested... See http://www.mccu.org.uk/ second news item..
Here`s some additional info from Ray Collett.....

Is your county short of qualified arbiters and you cannot run as many events
as you would like to?

I understand he MCCU can provide part payment of fees to enable a county
nominee to attend the weekend course on 9 and 10 February at Wall near
Lichfield. If you know of a county member who would be interested in
attending, please contact Cyril Johnson (e-mail in cc field). Cyril MCCU (chess) <[email protected]>

Please pass this on to other chess contacts or fellow club players who might be interested.

Please note...the above mentioned Arbitor course at Litchfield this w/e, being organised and run by David Walsh & Cyril Johnson, has now been postponed, partly due to weather, and partly to pending rule changes to chess rules, which FIDE are due to release.
They are hoping to rearrange this and include any new rules in the arbitor course, once details are known.
Watch the MCCU website for further details.
