Imperial College Congress 1 – 3 February 2013

Imperial College Chess Congress Feb/2013 – Report by John Sargent

On a cool Friday February afternoon a rag-tag team of students (and alumni that can’t seem to get away) gathered in the shadow of the Royal Albert Hall to take a van-load of trestle tables into Imperial College’s Union Dining Hall in preparation for an event that has been a long time coming – the 2013 edition of the Imperial College Chess Congress.

For the last two weeks entries were flying in thick and fast, to the point where we were worried that we wouldn’t be able to accommodate all the players! For this congress we used the improved venue of the dining hall, which was opposite the space used at the last one (but had the gym above and bar below so potentially noisy). The downside of our new space is that we had a capacity of between 80 and 90 players compared to the old room’s 110-120 – luckily, the number of entries peaked on the day at a cosy 88 which meant that despite promising to potentially turn cash-on-the-day entries away, we didn’t have to in the end.

Please visit https://union.ic.ac.uk/rcc/chess/2013/0 ... 13-report/ for the rest of the report!

The final list of our winners is below (links to full results underneath). Many thanks to all the players, Adam Raoof and those at Imperial College Chess Club who helped with the event!

Hi James - we have put the pgn sleleton of all the games on Chess MicroBase here - http://chessmicrobase.com/m/thov2ac - and I have all the scoresheets. If there is a willing volunteer out there ready to enter games, I'd love to hear from them ([email protected]), but if you want any specific games let me know and I will add them myself this weekend.

I think Ray Cannon said that (edit - thanks Ray) Jonathan Landau - Helge Hjort (an Evans Gambit), was particularly good.

Many players would rather see the games on a website that can be accessed with a browser only and found through Google, not requiring any login, rather than a private subscription based site. Even FIDE will store games if submitted with rating reports.

Of course the games would also be submitted to FIDE, who will store them even if they are submitted separately from the rating report. ChessMicrobase has no subscription, and anyone can access the games, though they might have to create an account.

I rather think that makes them invisible to the casual surfer or search engine. Other than your link above, how do you find the 2013 skeleton?

If you go directly to http://chessmicrobase.com/, there's no menu as to what tournament results might be present.

Imperial College could put the same link that Adam gave into their report, and/or use the embed code from Chess Microbase on their site to allow people to play through the games using the Chess Microbase games viewer.

No subscription or login required, as far as I know, and you don't need to create an account to view the games.
