My name mispelled again...

It is Steven Carr.

What can be done to correct this on the official rating database?

Let's find out what the problem is first.

Are you any of these people? http://www.ecfgrading.org.uk/?players=C ... S&inactive

If yes, which of them?

The ECF grading database has a feedback form at
http://www.ecfgrading.org.uk/contact which appears to be the official contact route. Changing a name should be simple enough as long as you haven't been duplicated.

I understand that this is one of a few congresses that uses the July list for its sections and ignores the January list.

That's perfectly ok of course and it was clearly stipulated on their entry form, but does anyone know why some events do this?

I was wondering the same myself, when my first round opponent was graded 181

I've Often wondered this myself, quite a lot of tournaments do it in my experience - what is the point in the new January grading if they are never acknowledged in the one place you ever use them, congresses? League Chess in Yorkshire, is by and large done on the live YCA grading.

Still the first round of Heywood was funny, because the August grades were in use my opponent out graded me by 20odd points, when I checkmated him, he informed me that he'd “played like a Tw@t” and proceeded to scribble out his score sheet, before asking me why my grade was so low :D

Ummm no. League chess in Yorkshire is done on the yearly grading lists that Jon finalises from the live grades every summer :) (Well certainly the Yorkshire league.).

The live grades can easily go +-10 (15, 20 in extreme cases) in a couple of games at the start of a season so it'd be pretty mad to try and use them for board order/team list purposes etc.

Since the the January/July ECF lists mostly use the same methodology there's obviously much less reason not to use the more up to date one. Still I also can't especially think of any great reason to prefer January - the vast majority of the differences between the two lists will be down to random variation.

Maybe they just haven't got round to changing things yet?

You actually find in practice, some teams on the Wednesday night league in Leeds, will actually put a players live grading down on the team card, for board order - We don’t do it in Leeds Chess Club, but we did have to clarify things at the LCA AGM recently, because a vote was taken on a stricter punishment for playing out of board order.

But yes I appreciate what you are saying and quite agree :)
