Shropshire Chess Congress 3-4 Jan 2015

Post by Steve Rooney » Tue Jan 06, 2015 9:44 am

A record 159 entrants made this our biggest and most successful event to date.

We were delighted to see Jeff and Nancy Cox and other members of the extended Cox family at the prizegiving. Jeff was instrumental in starting the original Shropshire congress in the mid 1970s. We are pleased to have kept the flame burning into the 21st century, and grateful to all the players who continue to support the Shropshire congress.

The Open ended in a four-way tie for first place with Gordon Scott's excellent run of four straight wins halted by John Cox in the final round, although Gordon was assured of at least a share of first before starting the round. They were joined by Nigel Ferrington (also named the Top Shropshire player in the Open - although John C also has strong Shropshire credentials of course!), and Ryszard Maciol.

Ian Emery and Nigel Holroyd shared first place in the Major with 4.5/5; and Marco Ho and Kieran Newell shared first in the Minor on the same score.
