Bolton Easter Congress 2016

84 competed in the Bolton Easter Congress 25th to 27th March, held at the Bolton Ukrainian Social club.

In the Open section the two top seeds FM Joseph McPhillips (Bolton) and Stephen Jones (Surbiton) met in the final round, with Steve having white and half a point ahead. Joseph over-pressed on the black side of a French defence and Steve triumphed to finish on a maximum 5/5pts to win the £300 first prize.

Dean Hartley was outright winner in a closely fought Major section on 4 pts and Jason Widdup scored 4.5 pts to win the Knights section.

79 competed in the Busy Persons Blitz, which was won by Andrew Horton (3Cs) with 8pts/8.

We have, and he correctly says that he puts the club in the graders report. Richard would probably also say that he can't second guess the club reported by every grader, he has to take the information at face value. So he might declub this player, but it'll only reappear at some point in the future anyway when the player writes it on the entry form and the graders report it.

The solution is for graders not to report clubs in individual tournaments. They're not playing for the club, so there's no particular reason why they should be reporting it. (Of course, the exception there is new players.)

One of my major bugbears is that UTU/Tournament Director picks up players from a grading list, and then regurgitates that club in the grading file, regardless of what a player writes on the entry form. People sometimes e-mail to ask why they have a club from years ago they no longer play for, and this is often the reason.

Anyway, sorry for hijacking the thread with that little moan. Well done to the winners, and I'm glad that the Bolton tournament seems to have gone so successfully.

The grading system should cease storing and tournaments cease asking for players' dates of birth for security reasons. Instead to assist with identification individual tournaments should continue to ask for current club and also ask for another current or previous club/school/town or county, storing up to a maximum of six. The database could drop the oldest information. This would be much more security conscious and an improvement over previous BCF/ECF processing of dates of birth.

The simplest method is the best. Except for genuine new players, or those who haven't played since 1994, everyone has a unique ECF grading code.

Yeah that's right. I was taking that field as a given; with clubs etc as bkup if new or young members forget to take their code along.

Hello Angus, All of what you say is currently if not historically correct AFAIK. However in each case the function can be performed better by neither storing nor using full dates of birth. When DOBs are sent to to results officers do you know whether they are transmitted and subsequently stored in an encrypted form ?

Security should bear some proportionality to the risk. I don't like giving my date of birth because I grew up in a time when this was considered private but even I can hardly see it a major security concern. Why does it need to be treated so delicately?
