Good to see Selwyn Hamilton still playing in congresses and telling them he plays for Warley Quinborne, a club he's never set foot in.Mick Norris wrote:Major (u 170)

That's what it says on the ECF grading list, perhaps you would like to give Richard Haddrell the correct answer?Alex Holowczak wrote:Good to see Selwyn Hamilton still playing in congresses and telling them he plays for Warley Quinborne, a club he's never set foot in.

We have, and he correctly says that he puts the club in the graders report. Richard would probably also say that he can't second guess the club reported by every grader, he has to take the information at face value. So he might declub this player, but it'll only reappear at some point in the future anyway when the player writes it on the entry form and the graders report it.Mick Norris wrote:That's what it says on the ECF grading list, perhaps you would like to give Richard Haddrell the correct answer?Alex Holowczak wrote:Good to see Selwyn Hamilton still playing in congresses and telling them he plays for Warley Quinborne, a club he's never set foot in.
The solution is for graders not to report clubs in individual tournaments. They're not playing for the club, so there's no particular reason why they should be reporting it. (Of course, the exception there is new players.)
One of my major bugbears is that UTU/Tournament Director picks up players from a grading list, and then regurgitates that club in the grading file, regardless of what a player writes on the entry form. People sometimes e-mail to ask why they have a club from years ago they no longer play for, and this is often the reason.
Anyway, sorry for hijacking the thread with that little moan. Well done to the winners, and I'm glad that the Bolton tournament seems to have gone so successfully.

The solution lies with the ECF. If they don't want to add [new] clubs for players in individual events (which seems sensible), change the grading software so that the type of event is specified, and then ignore the club field (except for new players) in individual events.Alex Holowczak wrote:We have, and he correctly says that he puts the club in the graders report. The grading system should cease storing and tournaments cease asking for players' dates of birth for security reasons. Instead to assist with identification individual tournaments should continue to ask for current club and also ask for another current or previous club/school/town or county, storing up to a maximum of six. The database could drop the oldest information. This would be much more security conscious and an improvement over previous BCF/ECF processing of dates of birth.Sean Hewitt wrote:The solution lies with the ECF. The simplest method is the best. Except for genuine new players, or those who haven't played since 1994, everyone has a unique ECF grading code.E Michael White wrote: Instead to assist with identification individual tournaments should continue to ask for current club and also ask for another current or previous club/school/town or county, storing up to a maximum of six.
No need for indirect methods.

Yeah that's right. I was taking that field as a given; with clubs etc as bkup if new or young members forget to take their code along.Roger de Coverly wrote:The simplest method is the best. DOBs are used to identify whether a player is a junior (or, maybe also, a senior) and are using in grading calculations for juniors. Although they're provided to results officers, DOBs are not published in the online grading database.

Hello Angus, All of what you say is currently if not historically correct AFAIK. However in each case the function can be performed better by neither storing nor using full dates of birth. When DOBs are sent to to results officers do you know whether they are transmitted and subsequently stored in an encrypted form ?Angus French wrote:DOBs are used to identify whether a player is a junior (or, maybe also, a senior) and are using in grading calculations for juniors. Security should bear some proportionality to the risk. I don't like giving my date of birth because I grew up in a time when this was considered private but even I can hardly see it a major security concern. Why does it need to be treated so delicately?
