Nottinghamshire Centenary GM Invitational

Post by John Swain » Mon Oct 30, 2023 6:15 pm

The final event celebrating the Centenary of the Nottinghamshire Chess Association is underway at Nottingham Mechanics Institute.

Nottingham Mechanics has a long history of involvement in chess, dating back to 1837. At a previous site, it hosted the famous 1886 Tournament:
https://www.nottinghamshirechess.org/wp ... m_1886.pdf

This ten player Round Robin (a better phrase for a Nottinghamshire event than my previous description of "all-play-all"!) is under the direction of FM/IO/FA Tim Wall, assisted by NA John Shaw and NA Hambel Willow. The GM norm target is 7/9 and 5.5/9 is required for an IM norm. There are two rounds a day 30 October - 2 November with the final round on the morning of Friday 3 November. Morning rounds commence at 10 a.m. with afternoon rounds at 3 p.m.

The results of each round may be found at: https://chess-results.com/tnr831265.aspx?lan=1

IM Andrew Martin will be selecting highlights at a new YouTube Channel:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uavaGDtTui0

There is also a 10 player junior Round Robin. Results may be seen at:
https://chess-results.com/tnr838337.aspx?lan=1&art=2 Games can be downloaded.

I recall playing in the Centenary of the 1886 tournament - except that in the end it ( a 10 player round-robin) happened in 1987.

Only just!! (20-29 January 1987): https://saund.co.uk/britbase/pgn/198701nott-viewer.html

I see that you won this "Chessforce" event by a point (7/9) ahead of a strong field.

Quoting the tournament organiser from Facebook:

"ITV Central News had a great feature story tonight about the Nottinghamshire Centenary GM Invitational (report starts at 14 minutes), featuring interviews with IM Jonah Willow, FM Ankush Khandelwal and Nottingham juniors Miheli and Senith Gunarathne. Congratulations to GM Eldar Gasanov (6.5/9) who won the Nottinghamshire Centenary GM Invitational, half a point ahead of GM Thomas Beerdsen and IM Jonah Willow. See: https://chess-results.com/tnr831265.aspx?lan=1&art=4

The prize for the best rating performance by an IM was awarded to Jonah Willow and that for a FM/CM to FM Ankush Khandelwal, both of Nottingham.

The Junior Invitational was won by Furkan Bahtiyar (8/9) ahead of Senith Gunarathne and Dinuga Basnayake who scored 7/9: https://chess-results.com/tnr838337.aspx?lan=1&art=4
The best junior game prize was won jointly by Sebastian Griffin-Young and Senith Gunarathne for their well-played drawn game; the best game prize for a player who finished outside the top three was also won jointly - by Miheli Gunarathne and Nikolai Harrison, who drew. All junior players received a small commemorative trophy.

Many thanks are due to our generous sponsors: Nottinghamshire Chess Foundation; The Chess Trust; The John Robinson Youth Chess Trust; The Friends of Chess; finally, an anonymous local benefactor.

Many thanks to: the helpful staff of Nottingham Mechanics Institute; the Control Team of Tournament Director, Tim Wall, assisted by arbiters John Shaw and Hambel Willow; Andrew Martin and Tim Wall for their entertaining Game of the Round summaries on YouTube; finally, arbiter Richard Buxton for lending us a vital DGT cable.
