With Peter Poobalasingam now on 2.5/3 (TPR 2690) I don't think Danny's quick draw looks unreasonable!

Is the J Upham at Uxbridge related to the forum poster of the same name? What if anything are the implications for rating seekers of his not playing today even though he was at the venue.

He's withdrawn from the tournament, and it's being rated as a 9-player all-play-all. (And yes, it's the same person.)

To use a cricketing parlance, John retired hurt 1/2 not out having been taken ill on Saturday evening.

He did come along yesterday to collect his belongings from the hotel, but wasn't well enough to continue playing. As Jack says, the event will now be rated as a 9 player all play all. This means that players will get an 8 game part rating as a result. We will then help them to complete their full rating in either March or May. It's unfortunate, but not something that can be helped.

Best wishes to John for a speedy recovery.

Yes, the relationship is a 100% match. I am Dr. JE Upham and played an appalling draw on Saturday and felt pretty groggy for most of the day. I went for a meal with friends on Saturday night and just following the starter felt awful and then found myself on the floor of the restaurant wearing an oxygen mask with various attachments stuck to me. I was then persuaded that I needed to be checked out in A&E which then happened. Various samples were taken and the assessment was unclear pending further investigation.

The night was rather unpleasant although I was looked after superbly.

I reluctantly decided to withdraw and would like to thanks the organisers and my fellow Capablanca section friends for making allowances : I still don't know exactly what the cause was.

John

I apologise unreservedly for any inference that you'd 'quit on your stool' and wish you a speedy recovery. The forum and more importantly chess at local and national level wouldn't be the same without your input. Uxbridge is proving tough enough for those in reasonable health!
