That Radio Programme (part II)

Postby Geoff Chandler » Fri Sep 17, 2010 1:30 pm

Caught the second half today when it was broadcast at 9.00am.

Thought it tailed off from a chess players point of view. Though
I dare say non-players and casual players would have found it interesting.

Seems the longer we play the longer we can hold back being senile.
We just go totally stark raving mad instead.

John Healy popped up. He's done more than his fair bit for putting
chess in the public's eye.
He was taught how to play by a Brighton burglar called Harry the Fox.

Maybe we should get Harry the Fox to write chess books or put him
on the ECF coaching team.

He could around to people's houses and teach them how to.....
...Nah forget that bit.

He is quite reasonable - certain not a rabbit at any rate.

:)

By coincidence I wrote about a couple of players in my chess team who
broke into people's house just a few days before I heard the broadcast.

No team captain had to go through what I went through.

It's just been included on Radio 4's 'Pick of the week', with the emphasis being on chess being addictive. The extract included John Healy talking about Harry the Fox teaching him how to play chess in Pentonville Prison.

I gather that Harry died some years ago.
