Thanks for this Sean - dunno if anyone else is watching but Bennett-White looks a bit odd. I don't remember much about this but I did spend some time look at Peter Wells' classic Winning with the Tromp and I thought the idea (instead of 10 Bg5 for White) was something like 10 Nd4 e5 11 Nc6 ef4 12 Nd4 d5. I only remember it because it bears no resemblance to chess as I learnt it. Still someone will no doubt tell me that Bg5 is the latest idea.

No resemblance to chess is something it shares with most of the theory of the Tromp. It's not really an opening you can leave for a while and hope to come back to. Whilst you are away, the theory gets even weirder. Still tempi never seem to matter too much and returning the Bishop to g5 has been tried before, Nd4 and Be3 being more popular choices.John Moore wrote: I only remember it because it bears no resemblance to chess as I learnt it. Mark Hebden came up with the idea that you could also sacrifice on e5 in the interests of development. So his line went 10. Nd4 e5 11. Nxc6 dxc6 12. Bxe5 Be6.

10.Bg5 has been played by Torre amongst others and is possibly just unfashionable. After 10 Nd4 e5 11 Nc6 ef4 12 Nd4 I believe 10....Nd5 (or 10....Bc5) are better than 10....d5, although last time I tried this, I lost to a junior rated 2507 called Ipatov who has since done rather well.John Moore wrote:Thanks for this Sean - dunno if anyone else is watching but Bennett-White looks a bit odd. Shame we don't have times for Bennett-White and Merry-Rudd.

Sorry about that. That was down to two faulty clocks, which I have replaced for round 2 (which is now underway at www.e2e4.org.uk/live).John Moore wrote:Shame we don't have times for Bennett-White and Merry-Rudd.

Great result for Peter Roberson. Looks like Miezis tried far too hard to win in a position that didn't warrant it.

Just been playing through Jack Rudd's mad game (appropriately) with Madan. Why is it that all Jack's long-play games look like classic rapid-play hack-ups?
[EDIT: missing 'p' in 'playing' added.. ahem. See John Moore's next...]

Does make you wonder why players can't turn up on time. Bad enough in a Swiss but not great in an APA. Disrespectful to your opponent who has made the effort.

Round4 is set up and ready to go. 10am start.
Peter Roberson going for his 4th straight win and a number of young English players aiming for titled scalps (Rudd v Jackson ; Merry v Madan ; Brown v Michielsen).
Klaric v Ghasi also looks interesting to me.
