Gibraltar
First round today and first upset - Kamsky drew against a 2200 in a very strange game.

Re: Gibraltar
Both Ivanchuk and Kamsky were held to draws, (or failed to win) .
The more bizarre episode was that according to the commentators, Shirov was crushed off the board. It appears though, that for all the high tech on display, the elementary precaution of ensuring that all the games were correctly labelled had not been followed and that what appeared to be Shirov getting destroyed by someone rated 500 points below him was in fact Navarra winning with ease.

Indeed. There was a communication error between the arbiting team and the live boards team, and boards 6 and 7 turned out to be the other way round from what the live boards team expected.Roger de Coverly wrote: The more bizarre episode was that according to the commentators, Shirov was crushed off the board. Very odd, I've had the round 2 games on from the start without any issues.John Moore wrote:Just been to have a look at the the live games and yesterday's are still up for PC/Laptop!

Good luck to Yang- Fang Zhou on board 18 today. I can remember Yang -Fang at age 8 beating me at the Richmond junior chess club with some wonderful attacking moves it was clear to me then what a fine player he was going to become. I have a lovely picture of Yang-Fang with his Richmond team mates his first medal it was.
when you are successful many losers bark at you.

Re: Gibraltar
A Worst Move On The Board arose in Hackner-Neumanova today. Yes, black's already lost at that point, but 34...Kc6 puts it beyond all doubt.

chessdom.com are reporting an issue or dispute from round 7.

In the event, they "got away with it". Precedent from the European Championships would have had them defaulted.
Here's the game, Ivanchuk is white.

On the same day one of the lower boards also agreed a draw before move 30, but was made to resume the game. The same thing happened in a game in this event last year.
Different rules for the top seeds, it seems.

Re: Gibraltar
While the brochure mentions a prohibition on draw agreements in under 30 moves, there isn't an explanation either there or on the website as to the procedure for agreeing a draw, or the penalties for contravention. For example, would you be allowed to offer the draw on the basis of a likely repetition without a position actually appearing three times? Someone was defaulted for doing this in the European Championship.John Wright wrote: Different rules for the top seeds, it seems.
In the London Classic, with only 4 games at a time, the procedure was that they had to offer the draw to one of the arbiters, who would decide whether it could be conveyed to the opponent.

Is it only me !! - but why are the reports from John Saunders (which are excellent) so far behind. We are now on R9 but the report for R6 doesn't seem to have arrived

Just keep doing a refresh, eventually you will see round R7, then after more refreshes you will see R8, then after more refreshes you will see R9. Refresh is <Ctrl> and F5. You may have to do refresh multiple times, but eventually it will come through.John Moore wrote:Is it only me !! - but why are the reports from John Saunders (which are excellent) so far behind.
