Andrew Muir has just beaten a 2631 with black: http://live.chess.is/2013/rvk13/r2b/tfd.htm

Is it reasonable to say that the 2631 beat himself? The engine suggests that the idea of the pawn sacrifice with f5 was OK, as was the Nxe5 follow up, but Be4 needed to be played immediately to regain the piece.

If you mean 19. Be4, then no. That fails to 19... Qxe4 20.dxe4 Nf3+. The blunder was 17. Nxe5. White should have played 17. Ng5+ or 17. Nh4 when the computer reckons he either recovers the pawn or has more than enough compensation for it.

The other line found goes 14. f5 gxf5 15. exf5 Nxf5 as in the game. Then 16 Nxe5 Nxe5 17. Be4 which is reckoned a bit better for white.

Here's the game for anyone wanting to follow it.

I see Andrew Muir's also beaten Sebastain Maze (2556) from France in Round 3!

That is a super game.

Black appears to have denied White two chances of a perpetual
with moves 43...Qd3+ instead of 43...Qxd4 and move 45...Qf5 instead of 45...Qxd4.

Not sure if White can afford not to take the perpetuals.
He gets mated in both lines he takes the h6 Bishop after Qxg6+.
That bit is easy to see. What happens instead of that is just too messy.

White let slip a smashing wrap up on move 53. Instead of 53.Ba1.

If Andrew keeps this up they will be strip searching him.

Last round today starts four and a half hours earlier, parings and results can be found here: http://chess-results.com/tnr72648.aspx? ... =30&wi=821

Gawain Jones plays top seed Anish Giri with white on board two. Simon Williams will also feature on the live boards.

... and the loser of this game has now gone on to win the tournament with 8/10, although, not surprisingly, he has the worst tie break score of the three joint winners. (Gawain Jones was the best English result with 7.5/10 and in a tie for 4th place.)
