Well, I am thinking either Garry Kasparov, or Raymond Keene...
Neither of them; better known than Keene, and no doubt at all that he was one of the world's best players at his peak.

Kenilworth Chess Club 2022 Christmas Quiz
Expanded to 60 chess questions this year.
From Mark Page, posted Sunday 25th December 2022.

I was chatting to Mark today and he said how he tried extra hard to ensure it would take a lot of work to Google the answers and some of them did not even appear on the internet at all !
Lose one queen and it is a disaster, Lose 1000 queens and it is just a statistic.

He does, but it wasn't him.

John Nunn? (Maybe give us a clue to the nationality, unless that would give it away - is it a German GM?)

(I have just noticed Ian said "better known than Keene" - that might narrow it down, or people might argue about how well known Keene is... To the person in the street, Keene is arguably very well known - to chess players, some GMs are better known than Keene.)

No. A big clue is that the DVD is signed by its author. If I counted right there are 80 authors of ChessBase DVDs, only a few of whom meet the criteria previously given.

If you asked 100 people on the street in England to name a chess player I'd be very surprised if any of them said Keene. For the author, in his home country, I think some would name him.

It might only take one Private Eye subscriber.

Without looking at the list of authors of Chessbase DVDs (will try and do that later), my next and third guess is "Nigel Short". I probably shouldn't be allowed any more guesses!

EDIT: I presume the culprit is on this list? (only 25 listed there)

Did you only count the pictures? There are many more authors listed in the alphabetical list underneath the photos.

Very believable. I thought it was a bloody good quiz. Way above my level, certainly.
