Varsity Match 2023

Post by John Upham » Sat Feb 11, 2023 3:01 pm

I look forward to attending the CXLI (141st) Varsity Match on Saturday, March 4th 2023 at the RAC Club in Pall Mall.

Anyone else from this place attending?

My gallery from the 140th event is

Hopefully Michael Stean will make an appearance once more?

Sadly, John Saunders will be cruising elsewhere so I will miss another lengthy and enjoyable chat with him.

As a taster here is a pre-mortem from the 2022 encounter:

Sadly I won't be attending this great event. I remember Hartston and other luminaries helping with one of my post mortems in the 1980s.

It was indeed. My word I looked better then. Don't remind me of the result though - Hartston wasn't very impressed with my opening.

Although in the position on the photo I would describe myself as having a slight edge...

Is this the same Ken Regan who is now regarded as the world authority on anti cheating?
Lose one queen and it is a disaster, Lose 1000 queens and it is just a statistic.

Yes. Fine player too in his day, as he demonstrated in the game shown above.

Had I been taking this photo (rather than the in-house Lloyds person) I would have moved the analogue clock (and rotated it though pi radians about the z-axis) to the opposite side of the board.

Details, details!

I was always amused at these events with Bob Wade making the effort to wear a tie. And yet, as a young player, he was always formally attired. Times change.

I love the "staring at the board' series of photographs particularly Adrian Hollis who always looked at though he was jolly pleased to be there!

Adrian loved the event. I have only been able to attend as a spectator once, in 2011.

So who's the scruffy 'Erbert not wearing a tie in that first photo? Who let him in??

(He doesn't let you resign and start again, either.)

Good question. I don't recognise the kibitzers. Is one of them Mr Truran?

He's the one with the white hair and beard and yellow/red tie.

Chessgames do not have the Nick Ivell - Ken Regan game. I've pointed them towards it on Britbase to pick it up warning them not to take the BCM 1983 version who had the colours wrong.
