An abomination on St Georges Day (and Tony Miles birthday).
Agreed, or at any other time. This isn't going to end.

It is only a matter of time before cheat-seeking arbiters get the power to make active mobile phones sound like a klaxon.

Test messages? Warning me about national emergencies? Pah! If an asteroid crashes into Burton-on-Trent and wipes out all human life in Britain, I intend to hear about it on the next day's Today programme like a civilised person.

The 23rd of April is also Game 10 in the Nepo - Ding Liren match, I have already predicted 1...a6 will be played in tribute to Tony. The games have been over before 3pm here. Hopefully something drastic will go wrong, something like all mobiles in the UK trying to store every other UK mobile number at the same time and all mobiles everywhere will conk out...forever!

As a natural pessimist, I wonder if this isn't being introduced for floods, forest fires or chemical leaks.

Forward planning in case NATO intervention in Ukraine goes pear-shaped. I believe a Russian media source suggested a nuclear detonation in the North Atlantic could submerge the U.K.

What you would do with your 4 minute warning isn't clear.

"Russian media source" - must be unimpeachable, then.

There exists a famous photograph of what a gentlemen did after the four minute warning for Vesuvius in AD 79.

As a natural realist, I am assuming it is just part of the ongoing strategy of mass surveillance. I hope that many phone owners will have set their settings to disable this intervention, but am sure that the State's best brains are already working on how to overcome our efforts. This will require the cooperation of the phone companies ...

Eh? Is Nick joking? Perhaps he should also consider that this exercise might be something in all our interests.

I did consider that possibility for a fraction of of a second, but dismissed it as flying in the face of all experience over the last 30+ years.
