Re: Soviet Chess Crossword
Thanks for this. Am going to try and few and then look them up - some nice clues there.
Am tempted to try and construct a few crosswords on even more niche chess topics myself.
(British Chess Champions; Problemists and Endgame solvers and composers(!); General chess - lots of potential for clues involving strange and wonderful aspects of chess.)

Re: Soviet Chess Crossword
I managed to solve 4 clues in both Mark's and Geoff's crosswords. In Geoff's that meant I had completed it!

Re: Soviet Chess Crossword
Well done Jon,
My next 4 letter crossword solutions are; King, Rook, Pawn and Draw. (Title: The KRP Draws.)
Adding to the fun you can think up your own clues. (or do a 4x4 grid word search)

Re: Soviet Chess Crossword
Far too hard, this is what is known as a "cheaters" crossword - unless you are aged 60+ and were a very active player in the Soviet Union there is literally no way you would know 90% of those answers without looking them all up on Google.
Lose one queen and it is a disaster, Lose 1000 queens and it is just a statistic.

Re: Soviet Chess Crossword
A less aggressive way to frame that would be that it's a Specialist Knowledge crossword (as opposed to the General Knowledge that most work on).

3 out of 4 were easy enough, but what's number 4?Geoff Chandler wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2023 5:18 amI've done one.

Re: Soviet Chess Crossword
This one took me much longer than the others to solve and once I had I tried to think of a better clue. I came up with "Player known to tire weirdly".Matt Mackenzie wrote: ↑Thu Sep 21, 2023 1:09 pm3 out of 4 were easy enough, but what's number 4?Geoff Chandler wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2023 5:18 amI've done one.

Also easy if you get into Geoff's head. Not saying I recommend that.

Re: Soviet Chess Crossword
I tried to make it as ungoogleable as possible. There are books in circulation written by established Englishmen, in which all found in the crossword is documented, its just a question of guessing the publication.Joey Stewart wrote: ↑Thu Sep 21, 2023 10:28 amFar too hard, this is what is known as a "cheaters" crossword - unless you are aged 60+ and were a very active player in the Soviet Union there is literally no way you would know 90% of those answers without looking them all up on Google.

Re: Soviet Chess Crossword
I did manage to Google a few. Some answers that seemed to be correct are showing as wrong. Maybe transliteration issues? I am still trying to solve about half the clues, so no spoilers!
