'Will today's masters follow the well-trodden paths of their predecessors, or will they choose a new direction?
In terms of probability, I'm not sure what the chances are although I doubt they are very high but the chess will be entertaining and instructive nonetheless. Has this ever been done before?

Sounds a strange idea.
A very long time ago there were Rice Gambit tournaments where every game had to begin from the Rice Gambit. Haven't googled to check details, relying on shaky memory.

There was a (mainline) Sicilian thematic tournament in honour of Lev Polugayevsky at Buenos Aires in 1994.

John Sargent of Civil Service chess used to organize "Selected Opening" tournaments, run as Rapid or Blitz tournaments, and one player picked a card out of the tin, and you played the opening moves inscribed there. Some of the lines appeared dubious, but it made people play different openings. If you're a lifelong d4 player and get a Sicilian Defence, it's interesting...
